Fibromyalgia Supplements: What helps and what doesn't?

Posted by onlyme @onlyme, Jun 12 9:48pm

I've had Fibro for nearly 40 years. Only diagnosed in last 6 yrs. I had already figured it out...
Helpful info:
Pain Day and Night...
1. Take Magnesium Malate 1000 mg. every morn.
Take Magnesium Glycinate 400 mg. every night.
Will help to stop the leg and muscle pain. Big difference.
At this point, I take Mag.Mal. 1000 mg. in morn but just need 200 mg. of Mag.Gly. nightly.
2. Magnesium Spray is amazing! I bought off Amazon. Use anywhere at night or day for pain. Legs, feet, hands, shoulders. Works for arthritis too.

Sleep...
1. Along with the Mag.Gly. above, I take Melatonin 5 mg. Never any more.
2. A sleep-aid (diphenhydramine HCI,25 mg). Generic. It is the sleepy part of Benedryl.
3. I realized part of my issue with sleep was arthritis pain. To stop it, I also take Tumeric Curcumin with BioPerine. 1000 mg.
I began by taking the entire dose at night then splitting it AM/PM. Husband now takes it too and swears it improves his sleep.

Energy:
Nothing, repeat nothing has ever helped me as much as cheap 200 mg. Caffeine pills when working. 1 in morn, 1 after lunch. I feel normal at least til I get home. Keeps me on my feet. Faster than coffee.

I've discovered a lot more suppliments which helped me over the years but these are my basics. They are cheap. I thought long ago I do not want to take a long list of meds if a suppliment can help.
Research suppliments for inflammation. There are so many. Some more helpful than others. Oh! Plus take a good quality multi- vitamin. Husband began taking Balance of Nature Fruits and Vegetables and it was shocking how much better he felt. I could see it in his day to day... I do not take them (they are not cheap) but did want to mention it IF it may help someone. He(husband) is worth it.

@onlyme Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! It is certainly good that you finally got diagnosed. Was there something different that you noticed that got you to a doctor?
I’m glad that you simply listed the supplements that you take and didn’t try to encourage others to take them.
Im sure that you will find the group helpful!

I have had fibromyalgia for 30 years. Not everyone has the same symptoms, but generalized pain and fatigue is a common denominator. I don’t want to be discouraging, but to my knowledge there is no medication that works for everyone and none that for all the issues you might have. If your doctor understands work with them, rest when you can and do what you can.

You are so right pollyperf! I am not an advocate of trying to cure yourself with supplements. I take 3 supplements recommended by my doctors and they are time and trial proven. Multi vitamins have been proven to help memory when taken over the long term.

The latest efforts for inflammation is grounding - has anyone tried the grounding sheets? I am ready to try anything, this pain is fatiguing, and I still work full time so it is hard to get anything else done...feeling lazy, but seriously! How do you all do it? Anyone try grounding sheets or shoes?

I suggest you start reading articles on this website, and National Institute for Health. FMS is hard to diagnose. My pain for example is not mysterious, it all is repetitive stress, nerve entrapment , etc. But my fatigue is debilitating, as is brain fog. Dr. R. St. Amand has written some very informative books which I highly recommend.
