Fibercon for IBS?

Has anyone tried Fibercon for IBS and did you have good results? My GI suggested it but I need to test for SIBO first since I have a history of SIBO. Thanks.

Hi @mbusch12. You have a journey ahead of you addressing possible SIBO and experimenting with IBS treatment.

You mention your GI suggested trying Fibercon, a fiber supplement that contains calcium polycarbophil, which helps to relieve constipation by absorbing water and forming a soft, bulky stool. Is an oral bulk former it absorbs water to form soft, bulky stool, prompting normal contraction of intestinal muscles. Be wary of side effects reported that include bloating, gas, cramping and increased constipation if not taken with enough water.

I am linking @sandyabbey, @lmowder and @marmoldav who have mentioned Fibercon and may have experiences to share.

Here is a Mayo Clinic summary of laxative options, including Fibercon:

I assume from how Fibercon is indicated you have IBS-C (constipation). Is this correct, do you have other symptoms? What other lifestyle and medication treatments have you tried?

I have IBS and taken a fiber supplement for many, many years. I buy the Equate brand of Daily Fiber that comes in capsules and empty five caps into my yogurt every morning for breakfast. I also take a probiotic capsule every day, have a small bowl of oatmeal, plus watch my diet to avoid foods that cause problems. My IBS has been mixed, both constipation and diarrhea, but taking a small amount of fiber has worked very well in regulating it. This routine may not work for everyone of course, but following it faithfully every day has certainly benefited me.
