Fasting and autoimmune diseases, does it help?

Posted by cpd54 @cpd54, Aug 19, 2023

I have Sjogerns as well as pre hypertension and pre diabetes. Has anyone tried fasting, if so, what kind and did it help any?

I don't truely know if it helps but I have been fasting for 15 to 16 hrs each day. I do feel better and my exercise plan has improved and my strength. I still have days when I smell things better then others. My weight is unchanged which wasn't something I was trying to change. I really have not had any weight issues. Not sure if I might be celiac or not but try to stay with low carbs from grains and wheat.

The only diet change that helped my autoimmune condition (Hashimoto’s) is the Autoimmune Paleo Diet (AIP). It returned my antibody counts to normal. The diet is very difficult due to the food restrictions and is not intended to be a forever diet. Back when I first started it there were not many online resources for help, there is now. It’s worth a try if you are a determined, disciplined person. Try for 3 months and see.

I did the AIP and it was an absolute game changer for me. But like you said it’s so restrictive. I did find out what “healthy” foods didn’t work for me though. I’ve been doing an 18/6 IF for a couple of weeks and my pre numbers are going down.

I have an autoimmune condition, psoriasis, as well. Wheat, strawberries and milk make my condition worse. Anytime, I don't eat junk food, I feel my condition gets better. So, I am on GF Diet and eat some non fat plain yogurt, and no strawberries. I hardly any sweets, whether sugar or maple syrup or honey. No pastries, no deli meat, no fat, only Organic Spanish Olive Oil. Lost 23 pounds and feel great. It is difficult not to eat junk food at the beginning, but becomes routine. Gerd is better and psoriasis is better, and thankfully, I do not have psoriatic arthritis, yet. It is all due to diet.
