Falling for no apparent reason: Any ideas?

Posted by callalily74 @callalily74, Aug 11, 2016

I'm 75, active, female, and constantly falling for seemingly no reason. I just fall! Three times already this week. In one fall, I split my ear and required 8 stitches. No dizziness, etc.

I need falling prevention classes in Seacoast NH. I am getting very worried that one of these falls will result in serious injury. Perhaps I need some kind of testing. Tomorrow, I'm going to an ENT doctor who was referred to me by a doctor at the Urgent Care Clinic who said my ear was infected. The ENT receptionist said maybe he'll refer me to an audiologist or optometrist to do balance, inner ear testing, etc. Does that sound about right to anybody who knows what I'm talking about. Remember, no lightheadedness or dizziness, etc. I take several medications for depression, anxiety, cholesterol, etc, but my mind does not feel foggy or cloudy.

Please help me find an appropriate doctor specializing in this issue. Or a suitable class or program. I am getting scared now. It happens too much. I only was really hurt once so far when I split my ear when I fell, but I know it can happen any time now and maybe disable me, or worse.

Please help me. I'll be here to see any posts all day today and am free to answer any questions you may have.

Basically, I think, a CT scan with and without contrast

I’m dealing with falling, dizziness, weakness, tremors, speech issues, stopping talking in the middle of a thought and/or sentence. I get my CTA test done tomorrow. I’m very nervous about getting these results. Hopefully I should hear something by Friday or Saturday.

I have FND,
Functional Neurological Disorder. What you are experiencing sounds familiar.

Inner ear problems often respond to the Epley maneuver. it is done with physical positioning. Once you learn how to do it, you can do it yourself. Some, including me, need a modified Epley maneuver to get the desired results. A Physical Therapist with special training in Vestibular Physical Therapy can provide a plan for this. It has worked well for me.

I would begin with seeing a neurologist. CT with and without contrast, or MRI's with/without contrast. ENT will take you on a merry go-round! Do the diagnostics first then select your specialty physician. Please address this promptly! You're right......Elderly falling can be catastrophic ie broke hips, wrist etc.

You might be short of glutathione. Try buying liposomal glutathione and take 2-3 twice a day. within a few days you should be steadier if that is your problem. If it is, you can make your liver make more of it. Take Milk Thistle, and eat lots of greens, avocado, and a little sulfur containing dried fruits like apricots. If it helps you, buy a book on Glutathione for lots of info on how to get more from food and what else to eat to increase production in the liver. Avocados actually have some of it in them. The Milk Thistle is key, though. It boosts your liver.

I was only able to see specialist once my pcp gives referrals before diagnosis. I just received results for a CTA but have no clue what it means and unable to get into see my neurologist until July 8. I’ve been dealing with all this since last end of September beginning of October. It has turned my life upside down and no longer have independence.

Hi. Yes, you are getting the help you need. The inner ear has that vestibular system that maintains the balance. The eyes have that vestibulo-ocular system which helps stabilize your gaze as you are in motion. The eyes also have to work together. The visual system also gives you that spatial awareness.
That’s all what I remember. I also have loss of balance and use a rolling walker or rollator. I get physical therapy which is called vestibular therapy to help with my balance issues.
I hope these help. It is difficult and scary to go through. I understand. Just make sure that you’re using your assistive device before walking even in your home. Take care.

I’ve been researching FND and it seems like I may have several symptoms from everything I’m experiencing. My fear is my doctor telling me the testing didn’t find anything leaving me feeling extremely disconnected, dismissed, and not being believed that there is something wrong with me, my body, and my head. My life has been turned upside down because of whatever this is that I have. Scared basically to go anywhere by myself for fear of falling, having issues getting the words to come out when I’m talking, being in the middle of a thought while thinking or texting and all of a sudden I don’t recognize what I was just texting, thinking or saying. Thanks for reading and any feedback is very much appreciated and helpful.
