Factor V Leiden: What exercise helps with blood clots? What to avoid?

Recently newly diagnosed..what type of exercise is done for blood clots and anything that should be avoided food or daily tasks?

Hi, @swright9. It’s interesting that both of your parents had the Factor V Leiden gene mutation. It’s an inherited condition that can increase the risk for developing blood clots. Inheriting the trait from both sides, that significantly increases your risk. I’m happy to read that you’re ahead of the game with taking blood thinners and keeping active.

Did your parents ever have any clotting issues?

My mother passed at age 46 of blood clots but I just found out 1 month ago I have FVL at age 79..

Hi, @swright9. It’s interesting that both of your parents had the Factor V Leiden gene mutation. It’s an inherited condition that can increase the risk for developing blood clots. Yes, they would stop taking their medication and end up in the hospital with pulmonary clots and be hospitalized.

My mother died if blood clots in 1968 but I never had a blood clots till now at age 79

Since Factor V Leiden is an inherited trait, it may be that your mom had this genetic mutation and passed it along to you. It can increase the chances of developing blood clots in the legs and lungs. According to an informational article from Mayo Clinic, many people with the condition never develop abnormal clots.

You’ve had a long life without clotting issues even though you have the Factor V Leiden gene. I see in some of your previous posts that you’re now taking Eliquis. Where did you experience your blood clots? Was this a one time event for you?

Went to hospital cause my legs felt like they weighed 100 lbs. They did catsxan and blood clots in lungs and legs were discovered..

That’s a frightening scenario, having blood clots in your legs and lungs! Thank heaven’s you went to the hospital when you did! That could have been catastrophic.
I’m happy to hear you’re seeing a hematologist now. They are doctors who specialize in disorders related to your blood, bone marrow, and lymphatic system. Hopefully now that you’re getting treatments, this won’t happen again!
How often do you have followup appointments?

Hi!
I was diagnosed when I was 25 I am now 47. I presented my clots at the time I was diagnosed with Lymphoma. I never had a clot before that. I am also taking Xeralto. If you go to Janssen's website you can get your medication paid for. If you have private insurance you will only need to pay $10.
I avoid large amounts of food containing Vit K. it will counteract your Xeralto as well as the grapefruit and cranberry.
I exercise a lot. Keeping my legs strong has kept any blood clots from forming. However I get the little blood spots around my ankles "Petechiae". I bruise very easily so being aware of your surrounds is important.

I had a heart attack at my work office when I was 35, I am now 54 and diagnosed way back then. It was a moderately new thing they told me, was on Plavix forever, not anymore just aspirin. The thing is now I get these blood bruises all over even when I just touch my skin does anyone else get this? Should I be worried?
