Chronic dry eye syndrome: What helps dry, itchy, swollen eyes?

Posted by shmerdloff @shmerdloff, Jul 3 12:39pm

Hi. Anyone have a solution (no pun intended) for chronic dry eye syndrome? Not Sjorgens. Hot? Cold? Oil? Drops? Duct blockage? Seems everyone uses everything with only moderate success. Saw ophthalmologist. Said use refresh🤷‍♀️

Have you tried what the ophthalmologist suggested? I've also found Refresh to work the best. I also sometimes just use a cool compress when taking a break or a nap. Is it worth investigating a bit more and checking out allergies? Dry eyes can really be a problem--I wish you success in finding more solutions.

My husband uses Refresh, I use Sustane. Both work well

Swollen and itchy causes me to wonder if you have allergies. Did you see an ophthalmologist and did they determine the reason for your symptoms? Allergies effects on the eyes might be treated specifically. Otherwise, there are prescription meds for dry eye, as well as plasma drops, punctual plugs, Lipoflow, etc. An ophthalmologist should be able to offer all the options. I actually received acupuncture that was my biggest help. My problem is chronic, so I do warm compresses, nightly Systane ointment and Systane Hydration PF drops in the day. My ophthalmologist recommends everything preservative free. I also have punctual plugs that help me.

shmerdloff, I am on Restasis & Systane Complete for dry eyes. I also have the punctual plugs which has been wonderful for dry eyes. I use Pataday over the counter when my eyes are itchy during high peak allergy seasons. Warm compresses help as well.

Being at a computer a lot can cause dry irritated eyes as you do not blink as much to moisten your eyes.

Praying for you to get some relief. Blessings...

Like others here I used Refresh eye drops morning and night even if my eyes feel fine. I do have dry eyes and Refresh also seems to help for the occasional itching. Ophthalmologist said to use 3 times daily and didn’t specify a brand. I don’t but will use as needed during the day. Sunglasses outside really help.
There are several good brands so pick one that says it’s a lubricant.
