Several years ago I was experiencing pain around my left eye and tearing/irritation. It was misdiagnosed at first as a possible foreign body in the eye with a scratched cornea. The problem kept getting worse, and thankfully my primary MD referred me to a corneal specialist, who diagnosed shingles in the eye with a corneal ulceration. I was treated with a special soft contact lens which had amniotic membrane on it. This was changed about every 5-7 days, and after a few weeks the ulceration healed, but there is a scar. I was also given an antiviral medication - valacyclovir. It was decided that I should stay on this drug once daily for the rest of my life, because the ulceration was so close to the pupil. I have not experienced any persistent nerve pain. If your doctor isn't a corneal specialist, my suggestion is to find one!
