Extreme/prolonged hip pain after hip cortisone injections
Hello! I received bilateral greater trochanter corticosteroid injections in August to treat suspected trochanteric bursitis in both hips. I was unable to walk almost immediately after the injections and 2-3 days following. I understand that this could've been a cortisone flare. However, in the 5 months since the injections, my mobility remains severely impacted - my bilateral hip pain is easily 20x worse than before the injections. Imaging done post-injection shows labral tears, burisitis and tendonitis in both hips. My doctor does not know why my pain has gotten worse and is effectively shrugging at my concerns. I am 33/f an otherwise healthy. I completed a course of PT without improvement. Is it possible that the injections caused the labral tears or other soft tissue injury?

I posted something on the thing, but I don’t know I’m 68 and this is cuckoo, but I did the Cortizone steroid shot in my back between my L4 and L5 because my pain started in my hip went all the way down my leg. It was excruciating after the shot. I didn’t have the Sharp pain, but it’s still very sore and I still can’t go upstairs and my leg is weak so let’s keep in touch. God bless you.
I just had my first cortisone injection in to my arthritic right thumb and it took place on Tuesday. My thumb feels better than it has in a long time. Maybe because it was just my thumb.
I hope you get some relief.
Have others had this problem with cortisone injections in the hand? Too early to tell but depending on how long it lasts I might be able to avoid joint surgery at least in the immediate future.
Growing old is not for the feint of heart.
I had nerve ablation They kill the nerve that's hurting. I'm still in remission. But it can grow back they give you 2 years.
Hello , I had a total hip replacement in 2021 due from a truck accident in 2018. Before the THR I had several cortisone injections but they didn’t help much after the THR I still had deep groin pain . The docs told me I needed the iliopsoas release and surgery was the only way it may work but no guarantees. I had that done in Mayo 12/24 . I still have pain when I walk more than a few minutes or sit in a prone position for more than minutes as well . I had several additional cortisone injections after but I think this is the best it’s going to get . I also have been doing PT three times a week since February 2025. My legs are stronger but the pain in the groin just will not go away. Before this I was an avid bike rider and a golfer. So now it’s the meds pretty much keeping me going . It’s unfortunate however I do not like drugs but I have really no choice at this point. I guess in time we will see how it goes . Personally my PT believes I have permanent nerve damage I believe he is correct . Thank you and good luck with your hip
Thanks for your reply, frankcat. I wonder if a nerve ablation could help if that is the issue. Someone mentioned that in a post. The surgeon did mention the release surgery you had, but I’ve decided against it as I could walk and hike before the recent cortisone injection and I did not want to deal with weakness again. My issue was lifting my leg without pain prior to the injection. It did take lots of effort though, 16+ months of PT and 5-6 months seeing a Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulation doctor weekly. I won’t ever have another cortisone injection because I’m back at the beginning again.
Hope you can figure out a way to resolve the pain.
Hi, what area were you hurting? Hip, muscle, back etc? Thanks!
My neck down my arm and leg.
Hello Mary,
I had another cortisone injection last Monday under ultrasound. He got the correct spot I felt it for sure. So far it feels a little better. I am also on pregabalin for the nerve pain as well . I am wondering if the doctor that did your injection hit a nerve as to why you are so much worse after? Anyway I hope you recover well after all this as well as myself it’s very nice reaching out to you it all helps , keep in touch .
Thank you , Frank

You need to see a good Orthopedic surgeon and get another opinion. Also, in the meantime, find a good MFR therapist. You will be in pain while the tears are existent and they can take a very LONG time to heal. but you want to be sure you are not reinjuring them and that they are indeed healing.
