Experiencing Neuropathic itch

Posted by taylorma @taylorma, 3 days ago

I’m experiencing in my neck and ear on my right side this neuropathic itch that really hinders me from sleeping. I had head and neck cancer in 2010 and i’m sure it is damage nerves . My question has anybody else experiencing this and have you found anything that helps?

Hello @taylorma. I had head and neck surgery 14 years ago and experience a very intermittent itch involving the ear on that side. When it is persistent I use a topical arthritis rub with menthol like Zim's max freeze or a Salonpas patch. These seem to dim the itch sensation for me to sleep at night. You might ask your doctor about oral Gabapentin for bedtime if it is very severe. It is interesting and annoying how the side effects from surgery and radiation keep surfacing years later. Did you have radiation after surgery also?

I have used and still to this day occasionally use a very soft make-up brush on the outside area of the itch. It is as soft as a cat's tail and for some unexplained reason, results in the itch or nerve pain to fade quickly away. My wife found this "cure" and it works for me. I think it helps the brain to re-focus. Just my two-cents worth.

@sepdvm i had 35 radiation treatments and 3 chemo of cisplatin. They did not do surgery.

My itch seems to move from one location to another and not usually everyday! Goes from neck to hands or feet (never my chest or back). For me no topical seemed to work (even prescribed Triamcinolone Acetonide) or hydroxyzine tablets. One thing that always worked was taking a bag of ice cubes and directly hold on area for about 20 minutes! Not fun but works! Just be careful not to damage skin. Probably not practical for ear itch. Good luck as this can be extremely sleep depriving! My treatment was chemo radiation fyi.
