Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficientcy

Wonder if anyone has seen anybody at the clinic regarding this condition

Is it a better idea to have an Gastro Physician? My Primary Care is handling my EPI. He also said I could have a glass of wine, not a bottle! I don't think this is correct according to Dr. Google. And not even a non alcoholic wine. Help!

I see on Dr. Google that coffee isn't good for those of us with EPI. I don't think I can give up my morning coffee and wine as well! Does anyone still have a glass of wine occasionally or is that really dangerous? I'm new to this diet and I find it challenging. @debhammel, I also have diarrhea and you have both collagenous colitis as well. I won't complain.

@j18

I have been told by my doctors that wine is no-no! About coffee, it stimulates acid production and can sometimes increase digestive disconfort or exacerbate symptoms like bloating or diarrhea. But is not inherently bad, it just depends on your indiviluar situation. I drink coffee every morning and I dont have any problems.

Thanks so much. I understand that wine is a no-no! There are some quite good non alcoholic wines on the market. Are these products acceptable? I also drink 2 cups of coffee every morning with no ill affects. Chocolate also has caffeine. I have been referred to the nutrition department at UCSF so hopefully, I'll be able to share information for our EPI condition.

You will be a super researcher.. I get my information these days from "Dr. Google." Hope to have a dietician soon. I was under the impression that any alcohol is detrimental to the pancreas. Now, I'll have to join you in "finding out" as well. Many thanks.

@j18 Guess I should have been clearer in my response of almost a month ago. I really meant to say ‘ a very small amount of my husband’s wine’ ! I also didn’t find out anything because I left the GI practice that I had been going to. My neurologist at UCH helped me get an appointment with a doctor in their GI department. Thank heavens!

@becsbuddy - when will you be seeing your new gastroenterologist?

@debhammel - how are you doing lately? Is your pancreatic elastase value continuing to improve?

@lisalucier I saw her about 3 weeks ago. I was so relieved that I wasn’t left with an MA or NP.
Everything was OK! Thanks for thinking of me!

I was just diagnosed with this Pancreatic enzyme difficiency, and am on Creon.
Lots of pills and I'd like to know if one should always take them with food, or can you take them before going out to dinner? Already I am feeling better, but am very tired and dragging around, but at least I know now what I'm dealing with. It is good to hear of others experiences. I just wish I knew what all the abbreviations mean!! Thank you.

@bhdupont Always take Creon with food so that the enzymes can help you digest what you eat. I know it can be embarrassing to take meds at the table in a restaurant or when dining at a friend's house, but you will get used to it and others won't care nearly as much as you might think. I was diagnosed two years ago and no longer care about taking my meds at a table in a restaurant - although I will explain what I am taking and why so my dinner companions understand. Good luck!
