Excessive mucus production in the upper respiratory system and throat.
Good Afternoon, I'm looking for some treatment advice for my post covid chronic condition. I had covid Jan 2021, I was put on a respirator twice that year ( first time for 9 days, second time later that year for 5 days). My lungs were scarred and damaged by covid and my capacity has diminished to 46%. I developed a cough due to excessive mucus production that always occurs in the morning and randomly though out the day. The coughing fits will last 5 -10 minutes which can include a sense of drowning or a gag reflex. I am not able to identify a common trigger for these fits with the exception that bending over for a period of time or physical exertion can be a trigger. The mucus produced is clear with bubbles and there is no pain associated with the cough. I been tested for allergies, acid reflex, have had the Clarifix and Rhinaer procedures done (that was a waste) and have been prescribed many nasal sprays . I have seen 3 ENT's, 2 pulmonologist and my Primary so far with no relief. I'm finding the medical community I have encountered are unable to help me manage this chronic condition. I see many on you on this support group have a similar lasting condition. I'm hoping for some insight on a treatment you have received that has relieved your condition so that I can make suggests to my doctors. Thank you in advance for you information, John Porter

Same situation here. I have had Covid four times and had four Covid shots. I have been suffering from the mucus problem for over five years now. I use the Neilmed nasal irrigation, fexofedidine (generic Alegra Allergy), mucinex and Axelastine HCI nasal spray. I often wake up from huge globs of mucus stuck in my throat which I have to cough up. I wish I could get eight hours of sleep. My nasal passages always have mucus present. I am tired all of the time and cannot get a decent night of sleep. I have been shedding hair for five years and have brain fog. The best thing I can say is that I didn't die from Covid. I have a friend who did. I have had three primary care doctors in five years with the VA and they are as perplexed by long covid as much as we are. Best wishes to all who suffer.
Thank you all for your posts ❤️. After 5 years of lung congestion and post nasal drip I have finally read words that make sense.
After a cold (presumed Covid) I started getting excess mucus in my lungs and nose and throat. It feels really similar to what you're all describing. I'm Constantly trying to get rid of mucus and my lung function feels nothing like it used to.
I have had tests spanning the 5 years and all normal. I have suspected this to be Covid related as it came on suddenly, post infection but doctors have been non-plussed.
I may now try NAC.
I'm in the UK and it's difficult to get to see a doctor. Are the NAC supplements you can buy effective? How much would you suggest taking and how often, to start with?
Thank you in advance 🙂
Some of your symptoms (Mucus/Phlegm) are similar to yours, but not severe. I do encounter it consistently in the morning, and discharge it when I gargle.
@clareysquarey Yes, the NAC supplements are effective for me. I would advise to start low. I only take half a capsule (I pour out half) as I find them a little too drying. I bought mine on Amazon under Thorne NAC, 500 mg, 90 capsules are $31. These were recommended by my Integrative Medicine doctor when I went to him after being diagnosed with Long Covid 2 years ago. I would ask your doctor before taking these due to any interactions with other meds, okay? I only take them now when I have a lot of mucus with a sinus infection or other respiratory infection. I do not take them every day. You must drink water with them to stay hydrated. Read the reviews on Amazon.
Have you tried a cool mist humidifer by your bed at night? This helps me too with upper respiratory stuff. I use distilled water in mine and I keep it very clean. I especially like the
Levoit 2.7 Liter cool mist humidifer. It's on sale right now on Amazon for $27.96. I put this
on my nightstand at night when I have upper respiratory stuff. The flow is adjustable and I have had no problems with the floor being wet or my nightstand. It is very easy to clean.
The thick mucosy saliva and the mucus in the back of my throat is gone unless I get an upper respiratory infection. It took 2 years. Like you, all tests were normal with Pulmonologist, except since COVID, I have chronic asthma, more prone to sinus infections, asthmatic bronchitis and pneumonia.
I am praying for you. I empathize. Blessings & Happy New Year.

1 ReactionI too have had respiratory issues, one after another for 14 months, leaving me with the phlegm build up and drainage. It's horrible. It wakes me feeling like I'm choking. I cough to clear it. All of the things I used became harmful. Chewing gum worked but the amount of zylitol I was getting was causing my blood pressure to rise very high. My dental bridges were collapsing. I've gone back to gargling.
Azalastine, my inhaler, and antihistamines are my go-to for night time.
I was not getting any exercise so I've been trying more walking.
I actually have had this issue since 2007. It's like I got sick and it never went away. 2021 got COVID in August and ever since my nose gets stopped up on one side every night constantly. I can't stand this. So I decided to try some homemade elderberry syrup that a lady locally makes and sells. It contains local wildflower honey and star anise, cinnamon, ginger and I forget what all but I finally got a little relief from it. You might want to try some yourself.
@kimuakee suefish here. I’m going nuts with that. Drowning in my throat. Thanks for the tip.
