Evenity is suggested by my Encrinologist, but not sure what to do

Posted by dswags @dswags, Jun 7 4:34pm

My Dr wants to start me on Evenity. My scores are Spine -2.4, Femoral neck -2.6, Total hip -1.6, But then I also was told I -2.9, not sure how these scores work. My health issues before even starting is I already have Gerd, off/on pain in my middle back, sciatic nerve issue, Arthritis (hands, back). Never had a fracture or broken bones. I take Alendonate now for about 2 years and took it about 10 years ago for a 5 year period. I'm told the inside of my bones are strong but the outside is deteroriating. Reading reviews, I really wonder why I should do this when I'm not feeling bad, feel aches/pains but nothing major. Almost feel like this could be like a cancer treatment. Very concerned!

@dswags Subsequently, I read some posts where people made good gains in the 2nd half of Evenity treatment. As usual, clear as mud.

@babs10 Dr. Benjamin Leder also discussed his then-in-progress research on shorter term romosozumab (brand Evenity) with OsteoBoston two years ago.

Thank you. I was prescribed Evenity and was supposed to take it about a month or so ago, but have not yet / it is covered completely by my insurance, but the heart and stroke side effects are scary… also I needed a quick gum graft surgery so I’m just waiting to get through that before I tackle something else! I have high HDL/high cholesterol and so I am going for a heart scan first! Then I’ll make a more informed choice, but this short course of the Evenity is appealing. I could not tolerate FORTEO

You might think about seeing an osteoporosis expert at a major hospital. Ex at HSS (Hospital for Special Surgery (NYC) there is a whole dept with osteoporosis specialists. Is your endocrinologist specialist in osteoporosis. Why does he/she want you to do evenity? What is his/her explanation? Evenity helps to build bone?anabolic.

A new article on Evenity. I think it makes it a more appealing option if it's not contraindicated for some reason.

@babs10 my question is Evenity effective for 3 months because that is anabolic portion while the later section portion is a bisphosphate. So if given for 3 months and followed by another stronger bisphosphate as Leder says will keep the results in place more effectively than the bisphosphate in Evenity. Again fracture data is the real measure in my opinion.

@sstopalian I'm going to Barnes in St Louis, MO. It has a very good reputation. I have more questions to ask. Thanks for your input.

I hadn't seen Dr. Leder presentation before my first reply. He did answer some of the question with that more research is needed. Thank you for posting that very informative talk.

I just finished one year on Evenity and my results in a subsequent DEXA scan showed me out of osteoporosis! In addition, I had no side effects during the year-long treatment. I am about to start Prolia to maintain and perhjaps increase this trend. Good luck!!
