Erdosteine for Bronchiecstasis

Posted by stevet @stevet, 4 days ago

When I was traveling in Portugal in 2023 I had a flare up of my bronchiecstasis. (later when I returned to the US my doctor determined it was Pneumonia.) Looking for some immediate relief for the flight home to get my extreme hacking cough under control, I visited a Lisbon pharmacy to buy an over-the-counter medicine.

I bought a box of 300 mg capsules of Erdosteine - sold under the brand name Milid. The manufacturer was shown as Mylan Labs.
The price for 20 capsules was just 9 euros.

The Erdosteine seemed to help. So when I recovered from my Pneumonia I asked my doctor about it. He looked it up and said Erdosteine was not available in his formulary. Further research leads me to believe it is might not be sold in the US.

So I was wondering why is it not available here if it is safe enough to be sold over the counter in Europe.

Wikipedia's listing for Eddosteine seems to be totally favorable:
'It is prescribed for chronic and acute respiratory disorders in more than 40 countries worldwide'
'Erdosteine shows an important muco-regulatory activity (it increases mucus production and makes it more fluid and much less thick), and positively influences the mucociliary clearance'
'Several studies demonstrate the efficacy of erdosteine in the treatment of bronchiectasis in terms of facility of expectoration.

'In several Countries in the world erdosteine is approved for the bronchiectasis treatment. Erdosteine has shown benefits also in the treatment of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis and Otitis Media Secretorica'

Has anyone else tried it? Does anyone have an an idea how to get it here?

Sorry to hear about your pneumonia! It's quite sneaky.

Eddosteine looks to be a cousin of NAC but not as long lasting or as potent. Here's a study describing its effectiveness in COPD, European based. Not a panacea for bronchiectasis but another something that might give some relief.
