Electrolytes and heart palpitations, racing and high blood pressure

Posted by mountainmarge @mountainmarge, 1 day ago

After 5 weeks of chronic diarrhea and just constantly peeing all the water I drink, which was a lot, I finally wound up in the ER completely dehydrated. The doctor recommended Pedialyte. I'll have to double check, but I believe it was up to 4 cups a day. I quickly noticed that whenever I drank it, my heart would settle down and stop racing. I began eating really healthy snacks as my routine diet, which should have been enough to have electrolytes in balance, but they weren't. I kept needing the stuff. I drink 3 cups a day. I've read that you can certainly overdose on it if your body doesn't need it and also that it willaste really salty if you don't need it. I have only experienced that once and it was shocking how awful it tasted. The next day I drank from the same bottle and it tasted fine again, just mildly salty. They say COVID can indeed throw your electrolytes off, so it's something to consider for those of you with heart issues. I don't know if there's a way to check your levels or how long may be too long to supplement this way, but I accidentally discovered that it was helping, so I've been drinking it for 5 months now with no il effects. I get the unsweetened clear one as sugar is not going to help me at all. There's plenty to Google about this, so look into it if your heart has been affected. Also check for adverse reactions to medications. I'm not on any, so I didn't research that.

I’m using coconut water, not coconut milk, one 8 oz glass daily is very helpful for restoring electrolytes.

@mountainmarge, I too had palpitations and my heart rate stayed at 120 for 3 months after the first bout of COVID in 2022. I was a sick puppy. I went to a Cardiologist to make sure I did not have heart damage from COVID....stress test...holter monitor....etc., all checked out fine which I was most thankful for. They said I could go on medication, but, I opted out due to my sensitivity to meds. It cleared up on its own.

COVID certainly can cause a lot of issues and they are different with everyone. Some people breeze right through it with no after effects....I have Long Covid and am more prone to asthmatic bronchitis & pneumonia now. It also worsened some of my pre-existing issues.

I do find that time is helping things get better. I still have not gotten back my taste for coffee, which is such a small matter compared to what COVID has done to others.

Praying for you. Blessings.....
