Electrolyte and sleep

Posted by enpool54 @enpool54, Feb 8, 2023

I have dilemma that I need help. I started having insomnia since my stents on July 6, 2018 after taking statins which is requirement. After ending the statin, I started having RLS which causes sleep issue in addition to insomnia until mid-September 2022. Since then I learned that electrolytes helps easing and getting rid of RLS. I started taking some off the counter electrolytes to find out soon that some have caffeine which causes more sleeping problem and the other have sugar that causes high blood pressure and high sugar level. So when I searched online I found out that I can make my own electrolytes by simply using lemon juice and salt with potassium (Na+K). This works but I have to take ¾ of cup of lemon juice and 250mg of (Na+K) every night before bed. My dilemma is that is it healthy to take this every night? Are here other health issues that this can cause beside drinking it fast so it doesn’t touch my teeth? I tried to reduce the amount but it won’t work. I tried to take it every other night and it won’t work. My blood test doesn’t show any deficiency of Fe, Na, K, Mg and etc. Are there any other electrolytes on the marker that can replace this that doesn’t have caffeine and sugar? Why are this electrolyte works? And What is the underlying problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi @enpool54, I guess I would run the question by my doctor if it were me, especially if you are on any other medications. There are a lot of alternatives on the market that are much easier to use. Coconut water is a good one but I would go for one with zero added sugar since it naturally has some sugar in it.

Do you think it's electrolytes or hydration or both at issue? The Sleep Foundation has some information on hydration that may be helpful - How to Avoid Dehydration During Sleep: https://www.sleepfoundation.org/nutrition/hydration-and-sleep.

Thanks for the information. I discussed my problem with my doctors and dietitian, but I have not been able to get any practical advice on how to approach my issue as there seems like to be lack of testing and very limited advice on diet. I am concerned if I drink lemon juice with the rate that I am taking now, I will be end up with other issues. My voice starting to change, and I am not sure it if is due to drinking too much lemon juice. Infact, I found the lemon juice electrolyte direction from the healthline.com. If you have more information on the pills like nuun without caffeine, and sugar please let me know. At present I have no choice but to focus on this problem. Thanks a lot for your help.

Thanks for the information. Can't find the Pedio Lite but Pedialyte is readily available. Has very high sodium and sugar for my case. I will look more for Pedio Lite to see if they exist. I added tonic water without sugar to my lemon juice mixture and was much easier on my throat and it worked. I will try tonight and see if it works again. Thanks again for the note (:-)!

How about using a straw to protect your teeth. They make environmental ones out of paper or metal. Don’t know anything about what you are doing but am going to try to do what you are.
