Weaning off Zoloft whilst starting Effexor. It's going too fast.

Posted by stephers67 @stephers67, Jun 16, 2023

Hi all, I’m currently weaning off Zoloft whilst starting Effexor. I’ve had two increases in just under 2 weeks. I started 150 two days ago and the depression is rampant as is anxiety to a point of suicidal thoughts. I feel I’m being pushed through to hard for a therapeutic dose. Any thoughts? I’d like to slow down 😥

Hello @stephers67 and welcome to Mayo Connect. I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling with your change in meds. Have you mentioned your symptoms to your doctor or pharmacist? If not, please do so as soon as possible. If no one is available to talk with, then you might want to visit your hospital ER. When you say, "the depression is rampant as is anxiety to a point of suicidal thoughts" that is concerning.

I would encourage you to make contact with a doctor or a pharmacist. Will you post again with an update?

@stephers67 I agree with Teresa @hopeful33250 I recall when starting a new antidepressant some years ago that anxiety spiked and it was really frightening to me. I called my doctor’s office and he got back to me that day (this was in the days before patient portals). Although I was following the prescription directions he had me back down in dosage and go up more slowly over time. That definitely helped me at the time. It was a different medication (Paxil) but I thought my experience might help you when you talk with your doctor.

It’s Saturday and while your doctor’s office might not be open there will be someone on call. Please call today and let the doctor on call know how you are feeling. After you have done that would you please come back and tell me what you found out from the doctor?
