Eating issues post-hiatal hernia, Nissen - when did you eat normally?
Hi. I had anhiatal hernia and Nissen fundoplication operation eight weeks ago. I am finding that I need to eat small bits of food and chew it into mush and also add some water or some liquid to it before swallowing. I can only eat a small little bit at a time. otherwise I start choking. Can anyone tell me when they started to actually eat properly and normal food? Thank you in advance.

Hi, @nadwa - these issues have arisen after a Nissen and a hiatal hernia, or aside from these procedures?
@wn77 possibly still have swelling. I read that it takes months to heal after this surgery.
Hello @wn77 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am sorry that you are having uncomfortable symptoms since your surgery. My first thought would be to contact your doctor's office to see if they have any suggestions for treating this symptom.
For many of us who have had surgery involving the digestive tract, symptoms of fullness and other discomfort seem to be the norm. On Connect, we have a discussion group where we discuss the best way to eat (in terms of food quantity, meal timing, and meal types) that works best for us after surgical procedures. Here is a link to the discussion, How Do I Eat After Digestive Tract Surgery: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/how-do-i-eat-after-digestive-tract-surgery/
Did your surgeon provide any instructions after your surgery?

1 ReactionHello,
I had hiatal hernia repair on June 19th so I’ll be 4 weeks this Friday coming up.
I am still having a lot of issues with swallowing. I also keep hearing gurgling sounds Everytime I drink something. I haven’t been able to move to a soft food diet yet which is making me sad. I am having trouble initiating a swallow as I feel some phlegm at the top of my throat which I didn’t really have prior to the surgery. I am losing weight kind of rapidly and I don’t want to get malnourished I also have extreme bloating which I know is usually with these surgeries but I feel like mines is excessive. I got the 270 wrap not the 360.
I also had EGJOO as a diagnosis prior to surgery (with normal peristalsis) so I am guessing the hernia was causing the EGJOO
Not sure but I am frustrated, I don’t want to lose anymore weight
