Driving with Numb Feet.

Posted by davidpn @davidpn, Jul 25, 2023

Over the past year the numbness in my feet has increased and at times I find my foot slipping off the brake. I’ve kept my driving to less than 2 miles and this might occur about once per drive.

My license is due for renewal and the medical form filled out three years ago (numbness not as bad) is due to be resubmitted. I can’t lie to doctors and pretend everything is okay but I do have a question.

Can any one recommend a shoe, currently using skechers which has helped with walking, that might help this problem.

Thanks much.

My feet are partially numb but numb enough that a shoe with smooth soles will cause my feet to slip off the brake. You mentioned skechers, the pair I have, has circular bumps protruding from the sole that helps to grip brake. No problems there. Also. I have a pair of Hoka hiking shoes whose soles are
designed, like most hiking shoes/boots, to better grip surface. These have worked well.

I've also found some gas peal and brake covers with bumps I'm considering. I usually wear thick sole soft shoes due to a foot issue from old dvt. But need thin shoes for driving.

Does your feet randomly burned? My does, especially while driving. The burn is SO intense thst I have to pull over and wait about 15 minutes before I can resume driving. It has been like this for 4 yrs.

Thankfully not. Just get numb. Not quite as bad last couple f days. More likely to go numb or number with less activity.

My neuropathy is in right foot only due to L5 nerve root damage during spinal fusion surgery. I wore Hokas for about a year, and then realized that the ridge in the insides sometimes caught on the pedals when my foot went back and forth from brake to clutch. Does anyone know of a Hoka that doesn't have the ridge? They were wonderful otherwise.

I wear Hoka hiking “shoes” but not familiar the “ridge”. I have automatic so no clutch. Works well, non slip from brake. However, when I go for the accelerator I slightly hit the lower side of the console to the right of accelerator but within 2-3 seconds I’m on the accelerator. But 2-3 seconds can cause problems in traffic. When driving I just concentrate more.

Thanks John,

I’ve heard of this but need to look into it further.

I've also noticed numbness more noticeable in my car(camry), vs my truck (old F150,currently down). Typi ally I drive the truck more. In my car looking for a set of anti slip pedals that fit properly. Experimenting with shoes and seat position too. Truck has a different seating position. So far very thin sole flexible shoes are best, moving my seat closer, foot slipping off gas at times lots better. Off to see cardiologist this week, next step ,find a good neurologist.

my nissan dealer warned against after market pedal covers. From a quality and fit perspective.

I have aftermarket brake pedal cover, issues with intalling gas pedal cover. So far. It does help with my foot slipping off the brake. Only happened occasionally. Once at the wrong time is too much. At times .ore problems for a second transitioning from brake to gas. When possible, I give my self more space between me and the car in front of me.
