Does losing weight if obese help fatigue

Posted by bbisno @bbisno, Jan 27 9:37am

I am an obese 86 yo female with HCM on metaprolol - will losing 10 lbs noticeably help fatigue from which I suffer?

Consider reducing your beta blocker (metoprolol). That might increase your adrenaline. I lost 50 lbs. from Jardiance and all my HF medications. I actually have LESS energy now (and more fatigue) after losing all my muscles.

Hello @bbisno and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect.
I see you have asked a question about whether losing 10 pounds will help with fatigue and HCM...since we are not here to give medical advice, that is something you should ask your treating physician.

We cannot tell you what you may want to try, and certainly telling you to decrease any medication you are on without the knowledge of your doctor is a no-no!

That disclaimer being made, we can share our own stories and share our opinions.
I found this online regarding obesity and HCM, check it out:

Ten pounds lost is ten pounds lighter and only a positive thing in my opinion.
Do not be afraid to ask questions. Learn as much as you can about what you have.

Here's another link for you to read from the Mayo Clinic:

Beta blockers can cause fatigue, but so can HCM, so I would ask your doctor for their opinion.
Is your cardiologist educated in the treatment of HCM?
How long have you been diagnosed with HCM?
Are your symptoms the same or have you noticed a change?

Interesting- losing between 4-5 lbs so far has seemed to improve shortness of breath but not fatigue- seeing HCM specialist on 4/28 and hope to lose another 5 lbs by then and see status of my symptoms- scared of wt loss drugs so using (expensive) Jenny Craig
Also interesting- my niece with HCM genetic study found no currently isolated mutant gene protein- will see what mine shows in April.

@bbisno HCM sure is annoying to say the least - fatigue - shortness of breath and others have additional annoyances. Congratulations on your hard earned weight loss! Keep up the good work; HCM or not, health gets an added boost. Wouldn't your niece and you have the same errant-as-yet-unknown HCM gene since you are of the same family? I am wondering why you would have a genetic test, too, I, too, had a genetic test and my HCM gene was unknown in 2022. I echo Debra, she noted a couple of things to read and asked you questions. I am glad you have an appointment on April 28th with an HCM specialist.
