Does DBS affect knee replacement surgery?

I have an implanted DBS and have been told i need a total knee replacement. Has anyone stone this?

My dad is having his Thursday and he has DBS. Some of the problems we have encountered so far is that for the EKG the DBS needs to be turned off and that before you go the person who is doing the EKG needs to know you have one and the placement of the stickers. Plus the person readying the EKG needs to know that the person has Parkinson's and that the DBS was shut off. Make sure that anyone who is doing any type of testing on you has called the manufacture of your DBS system to ensure that they understand the risks involved. We found that I truly have to be his advocate for this. To many nurses and staff assume to many things and don't understand.

My dad is having his Thursday and he has DBS. Hello @charyl320 and welcome to the Parkinson's support group on Mayo Connect. I'm sure that @jaculin and others in our group will appreciate the information you shared about your dad's upcoming surgery.

You make good points about advocating for the patient with the DBS to be sure that everyone on the medical team is aware of the DBS system and understand any risks involved. Your suggestion that the medical team contact the DBS manufacturer is especially important.

If you are comfortable sharing more about your dad's experience with PD, please share how long ago he was diagnosed and when the decision was made to implant the DBS.

I certainly wish him well with his surgery on Thursday and I look forward to hearing from you again. Will you post an update and let me know how he is doing?

The knee surgery went great. The DBS system had to be shut off. We showed the 2 nurses that were going to be in the operating room how to turn it off and on. When the anesthesiologist came in they were going to do a epidural for numbing and local anesthesia. However after talking they decided to put him completed under so his body would relax since the DBS was going to be off. He also has involuntary movement in the leg that was having the knee replacement. Some obstacles we have encountered during recovery making sure the hospital and rehab center understand the importance of taking the Parkinson's medicine on time, that Parkinson's patient require exercise and or movement for the upper body too during rehab, that they are also immune compromised so they can't share a room with someone that can spread diseases since they will share bathrooms and living quarters.

I so appreciate the update on your dad's knee surgery and the DBS system. Once again, you have been a great advocate for his care as he went through this process. Administering the PD meds in a timely manner during a hospital stay is so very important. I'm glad that you made sure that was done.

I'm glad to hear that this surgery is now behind him, and you are working with the rehab facility to make sure he is well taken care of. How long do you anticipate that he will need to be in the rehab facility?
