Does Benadryl (as needed) cause weight gain?
I just talked to my doctor she said that it's ok for me to take Benadryl as a PRN but I'm worried because I heard it can cause weight gain. I don't want any weight gain and I was wondering if I only take it Monday Friday and EVERY OTHER Saturday if I'd still gain weight only taking 25MG at most. Sorry I didn't get a chance to ask her. But she did say I could take Gabapenin as a PRN that it could cause weight gain but if I take it once or twice a week I wouldn't gain weight. Mostly concerned about Benadryl Thanks.

Hello @hannahkaye welcome to connect. I am just trying to clarify, are you talking about taking these for sleep?
I mean as a PRN for anxiety.
My doctors want me to take Benadryl at bedtime to address it chronic inflammation that is part of Erythromelalgia and I don’t want weight gain why would taking it at bedtime cause that? I take Tramadol during the day for chronic pain and I was on Gabapentin that doesn’t work I never gained weight on these drugs does it always happens with Benadryl?
Benadryl Is Great for Insomnia! I have taken it for years when I have trouble sleeping because of my neuropathy pain in my feet!
Not well known that it offers an alternative to OTC sleep drugs!
Thanks

@abbybarnes, I would start by asking your doctor how often and for how long you will need to take Benadryl to address the inflammation. Long-term regular use is associated with health risks. Occasional short-term use is generally safe for most healthy adults.
Please check with your doctor and let them know about your weight gain concerns too.

2 ReactionsI have Erythromelalgia and there’s essentially no treatment. I had a wonderful doctor in NY whom I lost during COVID Zang and was 56 when I got sick but I got into remission on 2019 and I was so happy. It was only in my feet but then a lot of mistakes caused by my PCP who set me up in get scurvy made something spread to my lower legs red symmetrical patches if bokeh blood vessels on the skin. Two new doctors who of o told you there credentials you would be shocked but they are trying to say it’s last cell activated but I don’t have any symptoms. I just want to go back to 2019 because I am sitting here locked up in my apartment because I work from home since COVID. I wish I had gone back but I work for a university and we were last to reopen. I am frightened at my life and I have no family and I don’t want to give up my job without any real plans for how to get treatment and survive v I have lived in my apartment since I was 10 so I am too scared to move because I won’t recognize anything.
I honestly don’t know what to do. I am afraid to face the day. I have to keep myself freeing cold or my toes turn bright red and burn I hadn’t had this for years. I got COVID in my digestive track in January 2024? And I think it’s made everything worse. They just did a study and I am just supposed to try Benadryl for bedtime 25?mgs. I don’t have allergies so I’m scared to take Claritin because I have no experience with it and I don’t know what side effects it can have. I can’t rest anymore clothes touching my skin below my knees because I feel tremendous heat and my knees turn bright red. I can’t cope much longer like this.
Thank you much just then I can’t try anything new to save myself. I don’t want to retire because there’s nothing I will be able to do. If I work I am still doing a job I have done for 46 years so it’s the only parts of myself I still have that makes sense and connects me to my past life.
