Does anyone suffer from random hand cramping and finger contractures?

Posted by kalliope56 @kalliope56, Jun 15, 2023

I am at wit’s end with a problem I’ve been having with my hands and fingers. My hands randomly have spasms and my fingers randomly contract. In particular, the fingers that contract are my index finger in my middle finger and occasionally my thumb. My fingers curl inward towards my palm and will not release for a few minutes. I saw a hand specialist last week who took x-rays and checked me for carpal tunnel and trigger finger, and said I did not have any major issues with my hands. He thought the issue might be spine/nerve related and he referred me to a neurologist. The neurologist ordered blood tests to see if I had any vitamin/mineral deficiencies and also ordered a thyroid test. All results have come back normal. Something has got to be causing the painful spasms and the finger contractions. The neurologist prescribed Gabapentin, and I just started taking it. Has anyone else had experience with random hand spasms and finger contractions?

You may have Dupuytrens. I have it. I had surgery in both hands back in 2013 at age 62. I am female. It has come back. I run my hands under hot water in the mornings and that helps. Holding a cell phone doesn’t help though.

I get that from RA. My hands have gotten deformed and I wear clumsy braces on them at night to try to keep them from contracting more. The one thing I’ve found that really helps me is a 70/30 solution of DMSO/distilled water at night which stings/itches for 15 min or so. Rubbing my hands lightly together until they dry helps. Am I allowed to post about this? I’m new in the group.

My hands just started getting numb md painful especially upon waking up. I was diagnosed with Tennis Elbow (epicondylitis) bilaterally from over use and years of using a cell phone, small e-readers, small and large iPads. I don’t plan on having surgery so manual therapy works for now.

@carijane Welcome to the group, i don't think there are too many places or subjects that are not found somewhere here in the Mayo Connect. hello and i am randy. you might check into essential oils or talk with someone that uses them. my daughter fixes me a rub in oil for my trigger finger and it takes 3 times a day to put it on. after a couple of days i can tell the oil is working because i can open the hand and the pain is almost gone. ive been told you can get needle treatments but the oil keeps me away from the injections. she has another just for my aches and pains. feel free to message me. my daughters out till tomorrow.

I have the same problem on both hands. First, there is Arthur and then I have a pinched ulnar nerve which needs surgery. Then the median nerve may get pinched and two fingers will contract. According to my hand Ortho Dr., I have to watch not to lean on my elbows or keep my arm at a right angle for long periods. I try sleeping with my arms straight at my sides or on a pillow. Sometimes this is hard. On another note, all my labs are normal. So no help there. As you said try and make the best of the situation. KLH

I had cervical spine surgery this past May 2025 and they are much less often it seems since. The only time I get them now, and they're much milder, is when I sit or lay in the wrong position or twist my wrist or hand where it doesn't like going. Also, if I haven't had enough water and/or salt in my diet, it seems to occur then. I drink pickle juice, yellow mustard, and will next try a few grains of sea salt... Sometimes ALL of them at once. The sea salt works well for a friend but I haven't tried it yet. Try to stay hydrated and see how long you go without episode, maybe? Sounds like you've been thoroughly checked already for possible causes. Good luck!

@beancat425 I haven’t had my surgical spine checked. That might be something good to do. I do recall a Dr telling me, it could be cervical spine related.

I have similar issues, primarily in right hand and fingers I’ve traced thru cause and affect that it’s either been my potassium, magnesium, and dehydration.

You said levels blood test came back normal, but are they normal for YOU. Do u have old bloodwork to compare to? If u do, u should look. If not, bump them up to see if it is.

Also, I take baclofen for spasms and found that it will actually cause spasms and twitching in my hands, again, primarily in my right hand index/middle finger.

It’s almost impossible to to text when those types of spasms occur!

I wish u the best!
