Does anyone have tingle in feet when touching areas of back/shoulders?

Posted by NJ Ed @njed, Jul 6, 2022

I have sensorimotor polyneuropathy and for past several years, it seems that if somebody touches my upper back or shoulder, I get these very strange tingles down in feet. If you touch left shoulder, it effects left foot, right shoulder creates odd feeling in right foot. Run hand down center of back towards lower back, it effects both feet. Very strange feeling. Best way to describe this is like the nerves are super sensitive. Know it sounds odd, anyone else experience this or have any information? Ed

Hi Ed @njed, I have similar symptoms when I rub the side of my lower hip. Whichever side I rub or scratch seems to cause some tingling of the nerves down the leg into the foot. I suspect it's a nerve thing by touching something in one part of the body sends a signal out on the nerve to the peripheral nerves at the end of the line so to speak. Just a non medical observation and opinion 🙂 Similar to having our "own EMG test" without having to pay for it and it's always available!

John, I think you have a good observation that this could be a signal thru the peripheral nervous system. I've searched that as a possibility as well and frankly, that is what it feels like. I've commented lately on this site about going to Mayo and Johns Hopkins and neurologists at both places did give me sort of a blank look. I guess this is just one of those hundred different symptoms with PN.
Thanks for your thoughts. Ed

Add me to this hmmm moment. I wear a Fitbit watch on my left wrist, and it interfaces with my iPhone. If I reach a step goal during the day, or get texts or phone calls coming in on my phone, my watch will vibrate, and THAT vibration sends tingling down my lower legs. Each time, I wonder how it can do that directly to my lower leg without me feeling it first go up my arm and down my spine, hip, and whole leg… I have axonal sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy. (Honestly, today I’m not even sure if it’s mono or poly or if there’s a difference at this point)

Debbie - I have identical diagnosis as you. Mine is idiopathic. Started with sensory and then about 4 - 5 years ago or so, my PN then developed further with motor PN as well. The feelings are very strange in the ankles and feet by a simple touch from knee up to the upper back. I can touch my upper arm below shoulder and heels vibrate. Most sensitive is mid area of back. Glad I'm not alone on this! No meds have helped me. Be well.

I too tried Gabapentin 100 mg 3 X daily. After 5 - 7 days, I would guess a slight increase in feeling. I don't have pain in feet. Problem is the med gave me anger issues so after 2 - 3 weeks, the doc had to take me off (taper down) but it did help a little.

Thank you.I hope you found a med that helped and if you please tell me what you are taking . I understand the anger issues I don't have that but feel I am nervous and forgetful to the point of embarrassment.
Anyone taking a med that helps them and without the side issues.

Good evening @jeanallen, I just may have found a medication that helps the nervousness and forgetfulness. It is Duloxetine. I now take 120 mg every morning after starting at 30 mg 3 years ago. I am calmer, approach things with positivity, and am able to take my time to figure things out. In other words, my anxiety level has been reduced considerably.

For anger, I use mindfulness and self-compassion. That took some training, and effort but it has been so worth it.

Good luck to you.........what do you think might work best for you?

May you be calm and at ease.
Chris

Jean - The gabapentin as I said didn't work for me. My doc then tried me on Lyrica and that gave no improvement. No side effects, no help either. In fact, when I went to Mayo, neurologist suggested in my case, I discontinue taking Lyrica. Some folks might do well with this med so each person has to find out what may help. At present, I have not found any med that helps with my PN.
