Does anyone have any ideas for pain management WITHOUT narcotics

My insurance has denied my claim for an emergency surgery to remove my gall bladder. They said that the fact that I was not taking the pain meds(dilaudid) I must not be in pain. Blood pressure was 178/115. I was protecting my sobriety and only taking tylenol and steroids. I AM a recovered addict and I can tolerate pain, not active addiction.

Toradol (ketorolac), a powerful NSAID, is great for visceral pain. It's essentially a more powerful version of Tylenol. It does require a prescription. Toradol comes in multiple routes of administration. It can be taken orally, through an IV, or given as an intramuscular injection. There is no risk of addiction with Toradol, as there is no high that is associated with it. Do not take Toradol if you have kidney issues or concerns of internal bleeding. Please refer to your doctor for more information.

Toradol is a great pain reliever for a short term recovery, but I have bad kidney issues so I was looking for some other type of non narcotic pain relief. I have learned how to endure pain, it's a matter of life or death for me.

I agree, Toradol helps a lot. I am also in recovery and I understand that fear of taking pain meds...however, I was also told once, that if you need them, then you need them. If you need surgery, you can make the doctors aware and if you need the diluadid and believe me, I get it, that you can be monitored or someone can give the meds to you without your having access? Are you in any program or do you have friends in recovery that can help in this? I have used Toradol before as well as 800 mg Ibuprofen. I also understand that this is life or death for you as it is also life or death for me as well. Is your state a state that prescribes Buprenorphine or Suboxone for pain? You can message me if you need to. I am sorry that you are having to deal with this and I understand!

Yes thankfully I have a support group-my home group is great 👍. 9years would be hard to throw away..I have been told to use pain meds if absolutely necessary. I just am petrified to go back. Kensington Philadelphia is the last stop and by the grace of God I made it through!!!!

I’m also in recovery, 19+ years and have lived in chronic pain since I got sober. I took 7 years off mindfulness training, meditation, acceptance & commitment therapy etc. I have recently been diagnosed with RA and completely understand how pain can become all encompassing and overwhelming.
The medical personnel and government have swung from overly permissible on pain medication to absolute denial. That is hard on us who are in serious pain and haven’t abused the medication. As a drug & alcohol counselor, I get it, but as a pain sufferer it’s devastating to not be provided with what gives some relief.
Today I take 5 mg prednisone daily just to be able to ease the pain in my claw hands; even though high dose prednisone has destroyed my kidneys, caused osteoporosis, heart failure and pulmonary hypertension. Heck of a trade off. It is completely discouraging, I know.
I hope you find relief my friend. What I found most helpful is learning to live with pain rather than IN the pain.
Acceptance. Modify activities and recognize triggers and limits. God bless.

I spent 8 years with severe Gallbladder Disease the Drs kept saying being I was so young it can't be my gallbladder. I ended up in Emergency surgery and they Dr who took it out said he'd sue any of the Drs to refused to look at . Natural pain killers Kratom go to your best head shop of your best area for nature food shops. Make sure to get one that is set up for for you and it will work . See a specialist I do r know where you live but I'll myself and over 15 people I have known in the last 10 years have almost died due to gallstones becoming to big and causing emergency surgery. I am allergic to Dilaudid and frankly it doesn't have the half life basic pain killers do like Oxycodone. After I had my Gallbladder removed they gave me Oxycodone that was after the USA moved it al to 14 days max unless you are staying in the hospital. I was up and moving and healing with I the first 6 days.. at home . Don't ignore the gallbladder get a sec opinion from another Dr

@staywell25 you need to speak with your treating doctors and let them know your concerns. There are methods the anesthesiologist can use to help you through the pain while keeping your addiction concerns in check. Most pain doctors are anesthesiologist no very versed in medication management.
