Does anyone else have chest discomfort after nebulizing?

Some days my chest hurts quite a lot after nebulizing.

Yes mine does also. My doctor thinks my chest pain might be related from the coughing I am doing to clear out the mucus. But if I cut back on airway clearance, I don’t feel comfortable having uncleared mucus. So not sure what to do?

Years ago, the standard medicine used in nebulizers used to make me worse. I used it for Asthma. Then, a new drug came out, and it worked like a dream. Unfortunately, I don't remember what either drug was. I assume the first was an albuterol, as that was the main and maybe only drug available. (I'm talking 40 years ago) The last time I used one was about 25 years ago. I used to have the medicine that worked, but I am sure I have gotten rid of it since then. Do some research and maybe see about talking to an asthmatic specialist if the medicine you are using is Albuterol. (I also can only use the brand name Ventolin. None of the others work for me).

I have the same situation. About a month ago I started having chest pain. My pulmo thought I had a blood clot. Sent me to er, I had all the tests plus heart tests- all negative. I stopped using the vest for a week, switched to 3% sodium chloride- I think it’s from airway clearing- I am 100 pounds only. The deep breathing, shaking, coughing etc, I think are the reasons for the hurting and even short breath. My pulmonologist is generally against the percussion vests for small people but I did not have problems until now. I am back to the vest but only 10 minutes with lower frequency than before after sodium nabulizing and before aerobica. I try not to exceed 30 minutes of clearing in total- there has been some improvement so may be it’s the reason. I hope this will help you try something new.

About 1-2 times a week I only do airway clearance in the morning. Hoping that won’t be a problem. I use 7% saline and aerobica.

Hurts when the saline is going in and I’m out of breath after nebulizing. I don’t cough much. Also out of breath after Arikayce

I also have chest pain, I think my huffing is too aggressive but if I don’t cough/huff deeply I get nothing. I wish I could find a respiratory therapist that would properly train me… I don’t want to hurt my lungs. I use albuterol and 3% saline and watch videos but still can’t get things to move without practically choking up a lung. I’ve complained to my Dr and they just laugh it off! Went to my heart doc. thinking the chest pain was my heart and had echo but all looked ok.

First off, I have asthma and had been using my nebulizer w/albuterol for some time. Suddenly I stated having that terrible cough, nite sweats and throat mucus. Had CT scan and was diagnosed with MAC. Was put on Advair HFA, 2 puffs in the morning and 2 in the evening. Have had 2 CT scans and a bronchoscopy and a following CT scan which showed a lessening of the bacteria. My cough, night sweats and mucus cleared up entirely so I opted out of the Big 3 for now. About a week - 10 days ago the chest pain appeared. Last nite it was so bad I put Salon Pas on! Got thru the nite and felt quite well this AM and right now as well with slight pain. Will have a CT tomorrow and am anxious as to get the result. Will talk w/doctor and see if the the Advair may be causing the chest pain. Hopefully, that will be the problem. I don't want the Big 3 as I am aware of the possibility of hearing and/or vision loss - my eye doctor is a neuro/ophthalmologist at Mayo and he says he wants to be on the team if and when I decide to go the Big 3.

I have had times like that too, where nothing comes up. I have wondered if that’s a problem, but my pulmonary doctor said that means I am doing just fine! Also, I take Mucinex to help thin the mucous, do you take that?

It’s not been suggested that I take Mucinex. Does it help?

I believe it does. Several people in this group take 600mg twice a day. I do that and use sodium chloride in nebulizer twice a day and follow with flutter valve for airway clearance. I was trying to force myself to cough up something when I was feeling absolutely fine otherwise. My doctor said perhaps I’m just fine at the moment. I recently started with a cough and after my treatments, I began to cough things up. Went on an antibiotic and am feeling better. Hopefully I avoided pneumonia! I am finishing my first year with bronchiectasis, so I am still learning the signs.
