Doctor thinks I have an ulcer or ibs is he right?
Hello everyone. it’s my first time here so I’m going to just jump into the explanation. Saturday I woke up with this terrible Lower left stomach and back pain to the point that I couldn’t look down or my back would ache. I did no activity but I am a heavy guy so I ignored it for a day. The pain still didn’t leave so I called my doctor that night. He told me to go to the er as soon as possible and get a ct scan to rule out appendicitis. I went and they did a ct, blood test and a urine test. Surprisingly all of the results are normal. Er doctor says that I should increase fluid and move more. I listen. Pain is no longer in back but it is still in my whole stomach and it’s also primarily in my right side. It’s not excruciating. I can still move around just pain but it’s there. I video chatted my doctor again and he asks me a series of questions. He comes to the conclusion that it could be an ulcer or ibs and gives me medication for both. One will be at my home later today while the other doesn’t get delivered till tomorrow. I understand that I am big but I don’t drink or smoke anything. I’ve asked is it appendicitis only to get told no because I’m able to be active. Is this normal or possible?

Hello @richv1988 and welcome to Mayo Connect. Unfortunately, the members of Mayo Connect are patients like yourself, and we cannot diagnose or answer questions as to what your problem might be. That being said, I am sorry to hear about the pain you are experiencing. In your post, you do not mention any other tests, other than the CT scan and blood tests. Has an upper endoscopy been discussed or a colonoscopy? These tests might help pinpoint other problems that might be causing this discomfort.
Have you had an opportunity to consult with a GI specialist? I would think that this might be a good next step for you.
You mentioned medications that the doctor suggested to treat ulcers and IBS? Have these medications provided any relief?

2 Reactions@hopeful33250 hello. sorry for the phrasing of my question. I sadly recently lost my insurance and am going to a free clinic and we. No other test have been performed. I have another appointment on the 10th that I’ll likely ask the doctor for more info. They’ve definitely provided some relief. Most of the stomach pain is gone and there’s only a slight discomfort left. Now there’s a pain in my lower back but it could be due to my new bed frame.

I am glad that you are feeling better with the medications that were prescribed. With any digestive problems, it is important to eat as healthily as possible. Avoiding foods that are fried or cooked in grease is usually not your best choice.
Will you continue to post and share how you are progressing with your discomfort? I would especially like to hear from you after your appointment on the 10th.

2 Reactions@richv1988 I’m sorry you lost your health insurance it please don’t let that stop you from obtaining medical treatment as needed. Ignoring symptoms can be worse and more costly than the cost of seeing someone sooner if your symptoms return or worsen. I hope you found the answer to your pain?
