Do You Need Skin Removal Surgery due to weight loss?
I’m interested in hearing from those who either have had skin removal surgery, due to substantial weight loss or feel they may need it in the future. I have lost 70 pounds so far and have 20-30 pounds to go….and I’m seeing loose skin that is bothersome. I’ve heard that for those over 50, it’s more problematic. I’m thrilled with my weight loss, but the skin is something I don’t I can tolerate.
Does insurance cover it? Hmmm….any information from those who have had it is appreciated. (Full disclosure, I haven’t had bariatric surgery, but this forum seems like the right place for the discussion.)

That’s good to know. I can wait on my body skin, but it’s my lower face or actually neck that is bothering me so much. It really bothers me everyday. It’s something that is very important to me. If there is anyway possible, I’ll get that done ASAP. The surgeons didn’t seem to think it would get any better. Sigh.
i read that you need to wait a couple years after weight loss to get saggy skin done. because it takes that long for the skin to naturally pull in.

1 ReactionRecommended for substantial weight loss. Generally covered if documented weight loss of 100 pounds or more. Hanging skin can be as distressing as the obesity.

Try to find a plastic surgeon in a teaching hospital

1 ReactionSo much for getting to cut costs. The first plastic surgeon says he requires IV sedation. The procedure will take 4 hours! Don’t know why. He recommended the lower face lift and said just addressing the neck wouldn’t do much and he wouldn’t recommend it. But, the price went up a thousand from what I was told over the phone. So….I want to do it, but it’s over $15,000. I’m sure it is worth it, but I’ve been saving for a new car…..I have an appointment with a second plastic surgeon in Feb. I’ll make my decision then as to which one I will choose.
That sounds ideal! I love that idea and think I’d be an ideal candidate. I was awake for one blepharoplasty and a rescission on one eye. I was also awake for 2 wisdom teeth extractions, as well as a dental bone graft. I’ll definitely discuss it with the surgeons. That should shave at least a thousand off the cost.

I am sure different facilities handle their procedures differently, but when I had my lower face / neck lift I was awake the entire time. No IV with drugs to knock you out. Just injections into areas to numb.
You will definitely need to ask your plastic surgeon about.

2 ReactionsI wanted to get it done in December, but one doctor can’t see me until Feb. That’s the Duke doctor. I also need a new car, so not sure the timing is right budget wise.
What do you mean about no anesthesiologist? I thought that general anesthesia would be required or at the very least light sedation, like with a colonoscopy. You’re out, but don’t have a breathing tube. What did you have?
