Do you have a favorite BC blogger or writer?

I’ve found a few writers that I’ve found inspiring. Not necessarily because they’ve managed their BC journey masterfully. They have shared real struggles or provided solid research links, a hand to hold or a hope to grasp onto. With a little humor on the side.

Here’s two I like:
Diane Mapes, a writer and blogger at the Fred Hutchinson Research Cancer center, diagnosed with LBC in 2011

One of her blogs, very interesting-

Liz O’Riordan, the BC surgeon, diagnosed with grade 3 BC in 2015, with later recurrences

These stories are not new, but you’ll recognize their journeys.

What a wonderful question. I will check these out. I like what you said about why they appeal to you. I'm also old enough to remember when women didn't speak openly about breast cancer. One of my favorite books on the subject is the Breast Cancer Journals by Audre Lorde. An African-American poet, she wrote the book in 1980 when it was quite ground breaking. It holds up because of how personal and insightful it is.

About Liz O'Riordan: She was a breast cancer surgeon and had no idea how difficult breast cancer treatment was for her patients, until Liz got breast cancer. Sadly, Liz embodies the typical doctor/patient dyad. I'm not sure how I feel about oncologists-turned-patients who are shocked by the breast cancer patient experience, despite seeing breast cancer patients and receiving their many distress calls for decades. THEN using their expertise to monetize the patient experience. How obtuse can a person be? The irony burns.

That said, if Liz has anything useful to say to whomever, that's reason enough to watch her.

M.D. Anderson has lots of videos posted. That's how I learned to tie a large scarf around my bald pate.

There's another Youtube channel called something like Yerba, which has many videos on diverse issues around breast cancer.

You're on your best scientific footing with sites ending in .org, .gov, or .edu.

Geneen Roth is a favorite author. She's written many books on disordered eating that have been helpful. As soon as I was diagnosed in July 2023, I started reading her Cancer Chronicles. She's very open about her feelings. I found it helpful.

I can't post the link because I just joined so google Cancer Chronicles on Geneen Roth's website.

Welcome, @clhills. Were you already familiar with Geneen Roth before your diagnosis? Where are you in the breast cancer journey? In treatment? Finished treatment?
