Do I really need my hip replaced?

Posted by sassycat41 @sassycat41, Apr 24 9:17am

I'm 80 yrs old and in fairly good health. I have arthritis in my right hand, right foot and lower back. The neurosurgeon said that the arthritis in my back was too severe and that surgery was not advised. However the orthopedic surgeon recommends that I have my arthritic left hip replaced.

Question: I'm wondering if it is bad enough that I need surgery. I don't have much pain during the day but have trouble sleeping at night... toss and turn. Also I don't have the typical groin pain. The pain I do have is sciatica.

Since my back cannot be fixed, is it worth it to have my hip replaced? Comments please. Thanks.

Agree with Sue, as I understood the point, try to find the rare orthopedic surgeon who will assess hip, knee, low back (lumbosacral), sciatica, your medications and diagnoses. Also ideally an internist or family practitioner who can Rx basic trials of celecoxib or similar medication if appropriate for active days, or difficult time sleeping. That said, hip replacement might help, just be prepared for many months of recovery and careful hip surgery precautions. My situation was somewhat similar to yours, although I am younger, and if I could go back 9 months I'm not sure I would proceed with surgery. Take your time investigating, best wishes.

Everyone I talked to who had a hip replaced said that it improved their lives. However I am still skeptical and decided to try a steroid injection first. That has taken away a lot of the hip and back pain so I can put off surgery until fall and then make a decision.

I had deep achy hip pain in bed before my anterior hip replacement in January 2025. I also had pain during the day as my hip was bone on bone.
A steroid injection helped but it wore off after 3 months.
I now sleep through the night because the hip pain is no longer waking me up.
There’s been lots of good replies on other possible hip pain sources for you, all worth looking into. Best to you.

That is a question only you and the doctor can come to a resolution on! It will get worse, and then you might have to deal with the idea that you will no longer be a candidate for surgery. Get multiple surgical opinions. I can tell you that the people here can tell you a variety of things, but only multiple surgical (orthopedic doctors will help you answer your question. I can tell you that for sure because I played that game for years, asking strangers about their experiences. Only the 4 orthopedic surgeons really mattered. And, boy, were THEY all over the board!
