Do I need to start Prolia? or can I wait and follow my lab results to
I am 70-year-old female very healthy 108 lbs. agile, & active (I am in wildlife rehab and fairly strenuous physical work 5 days per week). I was diagnosed with hyperparathyroidism 1 1/2 years ago which caused osteoporosis. I had parathyroidectomy (tumors removed) January 2024, followed by Evenity inj for 1 year. My CTX is 285 and DEXA is pending Aug. 22. My Dr. Rx'd Prolia, but why? I don't want to start any new drugs unless I have to! What should I do?

This has been so helpful. I do not want to put my body into more pain so finding out about real-life experiences with infusion and meds is vital. After 6 years of Poly Myalgia Rumatica, significant gout, chronic kidney disease and now osteoporosis, as well as everything that hits you when you are 81, I am feeling overwhelmed. If I choose to avoid the side effects of these drugs what is the outcome for the disease? I fear in her attempt to prescribe a treatment my doctor has a very optimistic view of the results of these drugs.

1 ReactionI am really interested in seeing what y ou ended up doing. My bone specialist wants to put me on Prolia as a longer term drug some time after Evenity. Since I am in my 50's, I will need to be on osteoporosis drugs for a long time. I don't want to start any medication until I have a better idea about the long-term treatment plan.

1 ReactionMine wants me to do Prolia as well. I've read here that some doctors only do two shots (one year) of Prolia then move you to Reclast. I would be open to that but haven't discussed it with my doctor yet. We're not going to discuss next steps until my 11th shot.
I am not willing to go on Prolia long term. I am 64 and anything could happen. Worst case scenarios include the medication not being available in the future for any number of reasons, or me developing an issue on it which requires me to stop. I don't want to be left in a situation where I face a catastrophic rebound effect.

1 ReactionDuring the COVID pandemic, when getting into infusion centers or Doctor's offices was discouraged, Amgen put out a video on how to self inject Prolia.
