Suggestions for diverticulosis w/severe pain in the sigmoid colon?

Posted by willow80 @willow80, Oct 26 2:01pm

I have mild diverticulosis but have severe pain in the sigmoid colon always after a normal bowel motion This can last for hours. All test clear and no answers from gastroenterologist and nothing for the pain Hence anxiety and depression I make sure I excercise daily and eat properly I have had this on and off for years but now at 80 I am having the pain daily Any suggestions ?

@mtpeony yes, I am fine now. I am still grateful for my surgeon. I was scheduled for robotic, which is how it started and they had to open me from belly down due to the damage that was found. I only spent 2 nights in the hospital though. (They had me down for 4-5 nights)

Could be but the pain starts After I have a bowel motion but maybe it is not fully emptied I do eat small simple meals and weigh 52 kilos at 5ft 3. I will try eating smaller and more often but then it will eventually build up I don’t experience the pain at night. Kicks in about 6am when I Wake At least I get some sleep Tha kyou so much for your reply 🌷

@willow80 Yes my problems start in the morning too.It is usually after breakfast.Sometmes when I wake up I have an inkling that all is not well and am not surprised when after breakfast there is a burping and then I cannot go to the shops etc.in case of an accident. I am very confined with this problem.

@lilbear Mar. 20224 - recover was not bad. I am retired and that helps with the stress of trying to recover.

@lilbear I would say to give yourself 6-8 mths. Since they had to stop the robot and ended up opening me up from belly button down. It may have taken longer. I was never in any pain. More discomfort. First week I was on round the clock Tylenol, Advil and a muscle relaxer.
It takes a bit for your body to adjust in that area. Small meals are a must, and I walked a lot. I also, had my own concoction cocktail for fluids. The first 4 mth's - Gatorade, Pellegrino Mineral water, coconut juice, white grape juice (no sugar)
It is uncomfortable to sleep on your sides for the first 2-3 mths My main complaint was feeling tired all the time and energy. The main thing that helped me boost my energy was red light sauna. Or just lying in the sun. When the Dr. said it was okay to take baths and swim, I was excited. Great to do all your stretching and low impact.
You will have loose stools and a lot of blood and you need to get big pads for accidents.
You will think it will never end. But it does! Once you start having normal BM's, control and no pain you will be happy!
Yes, I can eat what I want. But, you still have to make choices. You must get all your proteins, fruit and vegies.
I do not eat a lot of nuts. But, if I do it will be small amounts of what I like, and pumpkin seeds a great source of magnesium!
The only thing that has not changed is I am lactose intolerant. But, I can eat a small bowl on ice cream and only have gas. No running to the bathroom.
I can tell you that since the surgery my IBS IS GONE!
