Posted by willow80 @willow80, Oct 26 2:01pm

I have mild diverticulosis but have severe pain in the sigmoid colon always after a normal bowel motion This can last for hours. All test clear and no answers from gastroenterologist and nothing for the pain Hence anxiety and depression I make sure I excercise daily and eat properly I have had this on and off for years but now at 80 I am having the pain daily Any suggestions ?

yes, the gastro docs have no answers...I had surgery 20 years and the diverticulitis just came back--so every few months I get some pain and as the present protocal, just see if it resolves after several days, before restoring to antibiotics...which I had to do this past week (and just causes me more issues!)--Really sucks and is depressing to be a prisnor of this disease......

Sorry to hear you are having this pain issues. At 80 you are doing the right thing on exercise and diet.
When I used to have that pain, I would not eat and take 2 Pepto chewable and drink chamomile, peppermint and green tea. (all in the same mug) Within 2 hours the pain did subside after a good urination.
The key is to try and flush out what is stuck in the pocket before it becomes infective.
The anxiety and depression are the hardest part to deal with. Having a bath in magnesium salts will help relax you.
I luv the Dr. Teal salts but the liquid is not good for you. (you can put some coconut oil or almond oil in bath or use after you shower) Also, the heating pad and massaging that area of your belly!

Thanks for the helpful advice.. Did you do this routine when you just had some discomfort and maybe something was "brewing"?--Didn't the pepto tablets cause some constipation? I think the pepto tablets have some anti -infammory effect..maybe-----------need to try and avoid any more infections!!!!! And yes, the anxiety and depressed it caused sucks! Definitly feels like I'm a prisoner!!!!!

@mtpeony When had my first BM in the morning and then the next and the pain/fever started; I would do this "routine" I had to go to work! Or, had to go " somewhere" and had no option to just stay home.
It usually kick's in after my 2nd round of teas within a couple of hours and you will urinate like crazy! Then relief!
But, of course no one at work knew how much pain I was in. Some days I thought I was not going to make it. I would get up an hour early just so I knew if it was safe enough after first BM.
The Pepto will cause your stools to be black. I would never go 2 days if needed. And I never got constipated. Heck, I had IBS too. LOL That is one thing I do not have any more after the surgery! Can't believe I lived like that for so long. I always joke IBS is a "symptom" NOT A DIAGNOIS (: I know now it was my diverticulitis 🙁

@willow80 your welcome. I was asked by my Dr. if I needed pain med's and I said NO, I do not want to be on pain med's the rest of my life. I also, have to work, drive and function.
But, Tramadol was the only one I could take temporarily.
The teas were my go-to.

Thanks so much for trying to help. How much tea did you drink? did you have peppermint and chamomile together? So you had a re-section and then had recurring episodes? (like me)---Thanks again. What do your docs say?

I am sorry to hear abour your discomfort.I have Diverticulitis/colitis for past few years.I find that a bland diet is good.I eat roast chicken potatoes and carrots mashed with parsnips for dinner. One of the things that I have for tea is a cheddar cheese sandwich.I still have flairs but I think that the bland diet is a help.
