Statin discontinued due to neuropathy. What are some alternatives?

Posted by Nazir Khan @nukhan, Jan 19, 2020

I have been using Lipitor since 2007 for lowering my cholesterol which is on the list of those medicines that are suspected to cause neuropathy. I am thinking of discontinuing this menace but before doing so want to check with those members who have discontinued using statin and what is their experience. What alternative methods have they since adopted for lowering their cholesterol .. diet, alternative medication, exercise or anything else ?

Statin neuromyopathy usually disappears with stopping the offending statin. You can switch from a fat soluble statin [ all the common ones, Lipitor, Crestor, Simvastatin are fat solubel.]. There are water soluble statins like fluvistatin I think thats the name more expensive so you ask for a formulary exception. Zetia is often helpful and there are new non statin anti cholesterol meds that work with Zetia

I will jump into this conversation. My doc put me on 40mg of Lipitor 40 years ago, as my mother and older sister both had heart attacks in their 60's as well as quad-bypass. I am 82 and started experiencing tingling in my toes, then feet and now lower legs. As it was hard to walk much less do much with all this tingling, I decided to try CBD cream of a supposed strength of al lease 500mg (the FDA does not regulate the mg strength but try a strength that may help) I have been using CBD cream on my toes, feet and lower legs every morning and in the evening if I go out for the evening. Some days, I have total no neuropathy and others a bit of burning but no tingling. My Cholesterol numbers runs under 141. I think I will stop Lipitor for a week or so and see if my neuropathy lessens.I also have fibromyalgia on my upper body and I take 75mg every 12 hours. Hope what I have written helps someone else.

Forgot to add 75mg of Lyrica.

My doctor has started me on Repatha Evolocumab. One injection twice a week. Has anyone else been on this? I would like to know how you were affected by the side effects. Thanks

I had no side effects. My allergy to statins prevented me from taking them. Repatha has been a very welcome substitute.

Have been off the statins for about 3 months. Still numbness in feet and lower legs.. no better but no worse. Would be interested to see if the apple cider vinegar is helpful with cholesterol!
Mine isn’t real high but I did have a partially blocked artery many years ago and have been on high dosage statin for past twenty years. Numbness slowly developing starting with the Sock under toes feeling. Not totally numb.. kind of like John describes his.

MaryMaurer, you may think I am crazy, but I too take Lipitor in the, 40mg strength for 40 years.
When my toes started burning and tingling, I was very uncomfortable. I kept complaining and someone suggestion I take CBD pills. I decided I would try CBD cream above, 500 mg strength. To my amazement it took about 3 days but my tingling and burning lessened. I have been using CBD lot/ion over 900 mg for 3? Years now, and some days no neuropathy and ot’her days a little. It’s worth a try as everyone I have told about say it has, helped them.

May I ask what brand and strength you are currently using??

My neurologist just lowered by dose of Lipitor to 10 mg because I have had a persistent headache for almost 4 years. No relief yet but I know my cholesterol will shoot up. He said Lipitor can cause headaches. Like you, I have been on it for years. Why now?

I bought some CBD in Santa Fe, NM from bc a man that sells to a store, the owner suggested I try. I think the guy makes it in his basement. You can also try Volteran a muscle cream that helps arthritis and Neuropathy. Australian Dream works some as well.
