Difficulties getting disability with cancer. Should I get a lawyer?
I have a rare cancer, synovial spindle cell sarcoma. I applied for disability 5 months ago and still haven't heard anything about approval or denial. A few friends suggested getting a lawyer, but supposedly lawyers take a percentage of the disability. Is a lawyer necessary? Any suggestions that might help the process?

@jhilbish Everyone that I have ever known to be on disability had to go through an attorney to get results. I don't know about the attorney taking a %, but I would imagine as in every attorney case, they have to be paid a fee. I know you can go in and speak to an attorney who will give you advice for free...one time. Hope you find someone.
A relative of mine was denied for social security disability and she hired a lawyer that specializes in the process. The fee was calculated by a formula that was set and capped by law. She ended up getting three years of back pay and monthly payments going forward. Social security paid the law firm directly from proceeds. The lawyer only gets paid if successful, so well worth it in my opinion if you were denied.

1 ReactionNot only is it advisable to get an attorney, but it would be prudent to hire an attorney who specializes in that area of law in which you are dealing.
Best of luck,

Social security disability is always difficult. If you have a terminal illness, I think the approval would be faster. Technically, a person should not need a lawyer, but you have to get every document needed with complete information. Maybe the lawyer is better at presenting it, but they should not be necessary,
