What diet helps manage both type2 diabetes and diverticulosis?

I have both type 2 diabetes and diverticulosis. Has anyone been successful in maintaining a diet that addresses both issues?

Hello @44barberbabe,

When you mention diverticulosis, have you been diagnosed with diverticulitis as well? According to Mayo Clinic,

"Diverticula are common, especially after age 50. They are usually found in the lower part of the colon. Most often, they don't cause problems. The presence of diverticula is called diverticulosis. Diverticulosis isn't a disease condition."

However, when these pouches become inflamed, the condition is called diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis usually involves the following diet changes (a medical provider will provide a more detailed/individualized plan):

Eat a high-fiber diet. A high-fiber diet improves the movement of waste through the colon and decreases the risk of diverticulitis. Fiber-rich foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, seeds and beans. Cut back on red meats and sweets. Type 2 Diabetes has no specific diet, but Mayo Clinic recommends the following (a dietician will help with a more specific plan):

There's no diabetes diet. But it's good to focus your eating on:

A regular schedule for meals and healthy snacks. Smaller amounts of food. More high-fiber foods, such as fruits, non-starchy vegetables and whole grains. Fewer refined grains, starchy vegetables and sweets. Modest servings of low-fat dairy, low-fat meats and fish. Healthy cooking oils, such as olive oil or canola oil. Fewer calories.

From those general guidelines for each diagnosis, you can start to pick out some of the common foods like fruits and non-starchy vegetables as well as whole grains while unfortunately avoiding things like sweets.

@44barberbabe, have you had a chance to meet with a dietician or has your current provider offered any resources for how to better configure your eating habits to address both diagnoses?
