Diet for kidney disease and type 2 diabetes

Posted by rrr1952 @rrr1952, Jan 3 6:05am

My kidneys quit in July they are not sure why went through 2 weeks of dialysis and they let me go as I was able to urinate. I have type 2 diabetes under control with diet. DR tells me I have stage 3B CKD. I need a diet that will work with both. Does anyone have any ideas?

I don't eat or consume anything that could have a detremental affect on my kidneys or diabetes. I stay away from man made rubbish off the shelves and opt for fresh and home grown. No more sugar substitutes as they are worse for you than the sugar they replace. I tried to stick with my diet 99% of the time. A little transgression can be tolerated but straight back onto the diet.
One big problem I hear over and over again. Those new to all this are usually give a stern warning of doom and gloom. It is not and can be easy to move forward just doing the basics. Eventually you realise it is kidney disease not kidney death. Looking after your health and don't ignore the warning is the minimum you should do. I have found my kidneys are tolerant of a lot of things like transgressions with food and the odd medication that can knock the GFR.
The most effective thing I'm doing at present is no joke and actually deadly serious so don't follow my example for your own sake.
I have end stage digestive autonomic polyneuropathy which has paralysed the muscles in the digestive system so food cannot be processed efficiently taking around 48 hours to be partially processed. My glucose and BP are directly affected by the amount of food or fluid stacked in the stomach. Glucose regularly got to 28 mmol/l with BP hitting 225/114 in rapid spikes.
I'm now on a no food diet and just enough fluid to help the kidneys. The glucose has levelled out at 12 mmol/l and the BP is almost normal. But I'm now experiencing total metabolic collapse with steadily reducing weight. Four days ago I had a cardiorespiratory collapse and am having problems focusing the eyes with tinitus playing in sterio. Through all of this my vitals remain normal so can't get any help in ED as they won't look any further. If by some stroke of luck a doctor decides to give me a G-J opperation, that will save my life, but until then I face death before Xmas if not sooner.
The only way I have been able to survive for so long is not beng stupid with my health, heed the warnings and make changes managing your own health. You will be amazed what you can do when you have to.
Cheers

@cheyne Being a relative newbie here, I still know about the processed stuff, and sugar substitutes. And, I've learned that I can get away with a transgression here and there. But, ever since my hospitalization, which ended on June, 22, and then took three months to mostly recover, I have made myself sick with the doom and gloom mindset. I should be glad to be alive, and leave it at that. It's easier said than done, but that is my goal.

While I am stunned by what you're doing, I get it. I wish I knew what to say in response, but I don't, although I am so sorry you've endured so much pain!. If no doctors will help you, then you've got to do what makes sense to you. I'm not religious and have a quirk!y relationship with God, but I will pray that you get the miracle you deserve. In the meantime, the best I can do is send viral hugs!

Hi,
Thank you for the toughts.
It would be simpler just to overdose with my rapid acting insulin but what I'm doing is not about suicide. It is about waking up these idiots to what is really happening to me in the hope I get to extend my life expectation. It looks clear I will have to take myself to the very limit of survival to wake these people up. Then I don't know if that will wake them either. It is G-J opperation or natural death by starvation unless another cardiorespiratory collapse or more blood clots ends it.
My error has been fighting back against this disease which gives the impression I'm OK and nothing is to bad. Too much oiling my own squeeky wheels I guess. By all accounts I'm supposed to be bed ridden at this stage but this stupid body of mine only know one thing, get up and carry on, push through the advercities and grab what ever life I can get.
Cheers

@cheyne I am so sorry to hear all of this! Your fighting spirit is certainly an inspiration. But, I don't even know how to respond to all the pain you've endured. What do I even say when you talk about an operation that would have saved you five years of hell, and that doctors didn't listen or help? I guess all I can say is that I'm thinking of you and praying for a miracle for you. I'm not even religious, and have a quirky relationship with God, but I just wanted you to know that your story touched me deeply, and I'm sending you viral hugs!

Hi,
Thank you for the thoughts.
I believe I might have gotten my toe in the opperation door today. I had to make it clear I'm at urgent opperation time or refer me to the hospice to die comfortably. They are pulling back as it my not be the help required, but as I told them half a chance is better than the no chance they are giving me right now.
Twentyfour hours to go when I intend to have my last meal ever. Splashing out for a meal of fried fish and chips with lettuce and tatare sauce, my favourite. Sure it is going to hurt but the pleasure now is worth the pain latter, I hope!
I don't think it went to well for the gastro doc. I countered every deflection with facts dissproving their assertians. It is difficult to argue a point with someone who has made sure they know every fact about how ANS is and why it affects me. They may have just met their match point. Fingers crossed I did a blinder of a job on them.
Cheers

@cheyne You sound like a hero to me! I'm rather new here, and have some questions if you don't mind. If you don't feel like answering, that's okay too. I wonder how you "pushed your eGFR way up." Mine just dropped from 74 in the hospital because I was infused for 10 days with liquid, to 40 within three weeks, Then it went to 49 after an hour of hydration with saline...as an experiment. What do you mean when you say "you are mindful of their needs?" When you write that "you do as you want within reason," are you talking about what you eat? How do you "come to terms with being a walking time bomb?" I'm a nervous wreck, and I'm just starting this journey. If you evaluate everything, what have you done that has been most effective, and what would you do differently? If you answer anything, thank you in advance.

@hatetocook I’m in the same boat and new to kidney 3a after 18 yrs of controlled diabetes. I was very surprised but dr said it might not be from diabetes. I’m nervous as my husband going thru cancer and living with family. I’m thin and don’t want to lose weight. I feel energetic and hardly tired. I guess veggies are my new snacks and fruit.

@cheyne You sure are putting up a hell of a fight! And I'm supporting you from afar, and praying for you every step of the way! Given how sick you are, I am so amazed and awed that you're able to "counter every deflection with facts!" Just know that I am rooting for you, and so are others. I'm sure they have met their match, and that you did a "blinder of a job" on them! My fingers are crossed, and my prayers are frequent.

It sounds like you've got more than a toe in the operation door. You're taking my heart with you, and a ton of prayers! You are so brave and such an astounding wellness warrior, and I send you my love! In the meantime, I hope you had a wonderful dinner tonight! And, I hope beyond hope, that I'll hear that you're in the hospital tomorrow, getting the operation you deserve! God bless and good luck!

Hugs and all my best wishes!
Susan

@ladyrose74 Hi! I just saw your comment! I wish I knew more so I could help you, but I don't. I can imagine how surprised you are. To say "it might not be from diabetes," would frighten me, but wouldn't be helpful at all." But, that's just me. And, there are lots of people here who undoubtedly know what to say to you, or can answer questions you might have.

First, make sure you post this, rather than just include it as a comment. You want to get a number of people, who are knowledgeable, to respond. You need to tell them how you're feeling about this. I know that you're worried about your husband, and I'm so sorry that he has cancer. It must be devastating, and you sure didn't need any more stress.

But, you need to let people how you felt, other than surprised, when your doctor told you this. Did he or she provide any information or an explanation? Why did he/she say he didn't think it's from diabetes? What test numbers was he looking at? What are your biggest concerns right now? What do you want/need to know. I'm asking you these questions as a writer, not someone who is new here.

Ladyrose 74, my strength and weakness as a writer and author is that I wear my emotions on my sleeve. That's who I am, but it also causes people to respond. But, it's not clear what you want to know and why. When you write that you're feeling energetic and hardly tired, it's good to know, but others may not think you need help. When you write that you guess "veggies and fruit are your new snack," even though you're already thin, it suggests that you're okay with this, and I imagine you're really not.

If I'm off base, I truly apologize. But, if you're scared and want information, or just need support, I hope my suggestions help. You can privately email me if you want to discuss this further.

@cheyne I didn't know how to respond to this. Because of everything you wrote elsewhere, I knew you weren't trying to commit suicide. I also knew you felt that this was your best opportunity to show how much you want your surgery. And, I sensed that some people might think you're okay, when it's just the opposite. You're one tough cookie, and I get it. But, it doesn't mean that you not in terrible pain, and possibly very frightened. I just want to acknowledge what you wrote, and let you know that I read it, but it was easier for me to respond what you wrote below!

Hugs,
Susan

Even though my eGFR is 32 and ACR is 69 my nephrologist still has me at stage 3a. I'm 72 and my sugars, sodium, calcium, phosphorous, and potassium levels are all normal and I don't have edema or other symptoms. I have some fatigue but can still lift weights (some impact on creatinine levels) and do aerobic workouts most days. She has me on 10 mg/day of Farxiga (an SGLT2 med) that dropped my average systolic BP to 105. My kidneys are also being flooded by sticky Kappa proteins from a blood pre-cancer that likely affects function. I don't have diabetes but am on a low sugar diet. While with stage 3b we are supposed to avoid red meat (and creatin supplements), having some fat such as olive oil, lean protein, fiber, and complex carbs with every meal is important to feeling full, slow digestion, and moderating sugar absorption. Adding a soluble/insoluble fiber such as psyllium hust slows digestion (helps my IBD), feeds gut bacteria, and can also help to bind cholesterol so it doesn't get reabsorbed into your bloodstream. I found this pdf on how some doctors evaluate our kidney disease and such: https://kdigo.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/KDIGO-2024-CKD-Guideline.pdf

@kayabbott You're a real role model! Thanks for sharing all the information. It's very helpful for me, and for the pdf. I've copied it, and plan on reading it over the weekend.

Yes, hi and thank you. My first appointment with the kidney specialist is Sept 29. I’m sure after finding out more I can express more. Yes, I’m scared , very.
Overwhelmed. Lots to deal with esp my hubby.
I just try to find the positive.
My diabetes for so long is very under control as I’m very strict with diet. Now with kidney, I am almost afraid to eat. I don’t want to
Lose weight. Everyone has different advice on what to consume. I appreciate your advice . I’m looking for a diet that can complete both sugar and kidney. I’ve read a lot of different opinions. Confused I guess.
