I am about to start the keto diet. I have been practicing intermittent fasting for months and have lost 17 pounds. I would like to know how you do the keto diet. I have been hesitant because I also have kidney disease, and some of the foods in the diet are not good for the kidneys. I appreciate any suggestions you provide. Thanks and best of luck!

@roses2 I gather that keto can be hard on the kidneys in general, or even counter indicated. I have kidney disease and I wouldn't start a keto diet without checking with my nephrologist. As I don't know a great deal about this I would certainly get a professional opinion--maybe from a dietician as well. Books and boards can be great, but I'd make sure to get information from my doctor first.

@roses2 oh, I would definitely ask your Dr about what you can and can’t do. I don’t have kidney disease so I don’t know how to advise. I eat plenty of fats and some protein and very little carbs. I feel good eating this way because I don’t have to deal with the sugar fluctuations. But for some people, just doing IF and eating a Mediterranean type of diet works well. But definitely check with your dr. because you don’t want your kidney issues to worsen! Good luck!

@newtosc HI - I am starting the 5 treatments in a week and hate the entire situation I find myself in at a healthy 72. I am angry and sad but am reading more about increasing cancer fighting foods in my diet.. Figured it cannot hurt.

@newtosc Hello - I am the same and start treatment this week. I am furious, angry, sad and much, much more about this happening to me. But I will do the radiation because I cannot do it in 6 months etc. and although it kills healthy cells I get closer to 100% "cure" - I hope - I will try the meds for a bit. I am searching for holistic options but an definitely improving my diet. Please post what you find because I believe we can enhance our "traditional medicine" options.

I have been practicing keto and intermittent fasting for 2-3 years. If you want to know if you are in ketosis you need to test. Thomas Seyfreid, the guru of keto and cancer says we need a GKI of 3 to manage glioblastoma. The average American has a GKI of 22. You measure by buying a libre 2 monitor and using glucose and keto strips. These are used by diabetics. Prick your finger and apply a drop of blood to each strip. The mathematical equation is glucose divided by ketone number. If the number is under 11 you are in fat burning mode. The target is 3 to control the growth of cancer which feeds on sugar. Test don’t guess it’s the only way to know if you’re doing keto right.

@roses2 the keto diet is possibly the worst diet you can do, you need to focus on vegetables, fruit and legumes and grains - keto puts stress on the kidneys - eat healthy foods instead. If you’re going it for weight loss, eat legumes every day.

@colleenyoung OMG, I'm sorry, this is too much hype for me. My friend with ovarian cancer did the surgery then launched into a big naturapathic way to treat it that included just the right foods, mostly vegetables, sat in hyperbaric chambers to kill the cancer (it didn't), lost way too much weight, and was too afraid to go on chemo or even hormone blockers. She prayed a lot. It continued to spread, and she didn't live more than a few years. This lady is just making it sound so easy, if you just do it right.

@jardinera25, I agree. The journey is different for everyone and easy for no one.
