Diarrhea after eating, abdominal pain.

Posted by katieb @katieb, Jul 16, 2011

Recently I have been getting diarrhea about 15 minutes to an hour after eating. Accompanying this is severe stomach cramps and pain. After a trip to the doctor, they decided that it was my gallbladder causing the symptom. In November, I had my gallbladder removed because it was full of stones and sludge. It has now been 8 months and the symptoms have not went away or decreased. Last week, I had a colonoscopy and an endoscopy. Biopsies were done on my large intestine and stomach. All results came back negative. I do not want to live the rest of my life with these symptoms. Any suggestions?

Maybe you should keep a food journal to track what foods aggravate your symptoms. I have Crohn’s Disease and this is one of the very first things I did that helped a lot. Another thing might be to cut out all gluten. Not that this is easy to do but I have met a few people online who first thought they had Crohn’s Disease, but ended up with a gluten allergy. Oh one more thing, my brother was having some of the same problem and they first thought he had Crohn’s because I have Crohn’s, but turns out he had Helicobacter pylori which is some strange type of bacterial infection. Hope you find some relief ASAP!

I developed these same symptoms several years back. For almost a year, I thought I was lactose intolerant until a PA suggested I try over the counter probiotics for relief. My symptoms were gone immediately. I began taking Align probiotics which were fairly expensive but later experimented and found similar results with generic Walgreens and CVS brands at a third of the cost.

Get a copy of your colonoscopy report and see what it says about diverticulosis (pockets in your colon). I had the same symptoms and found out I have diverticulitis (inflammed pockets). Not fun. I am trying to learn to control it with my diet.

Do you know if they tested for celiac disease? Those were some of my main symptoms..cramps going to the bathroom after eating. I suggest you ask them if they tested for this!

Avoid wheat, eat gluten-free, no beer, for 1 meal and see if it occurs. If it doesn’t welcome to our gluten-free club.

I have all of these symptoms as a result of hiatal hernia surgery and I have been diagnosed with DUMPING SYNDROME. I cannot drink 30 mins before a meal, nothing to drink during the meal and nothing for 30 – 60 mins after. Even with that, I still have the same problems

I am three months post gallbladder removal and I still have nausea alot with pain in my left ribs and back. I have had Ct scans, MRI, Hida scan (which showed low function so I had the surgery), small bowel study, endoscope (showed stomach inflammation), colonoscopy, x-rays of lungs, shoulder and ribs, and abdominal ultrasound as well as three sets of blood work—all normal except the endoscopy—yet my digestion is bad everyday. I lost 12 pounds in 4 months. because i can’t eat a lot—I had the diarrhea but don’t have it much anymore …I take 20 mg. protonix, carafate, plant based digestive enzymes and some probiotics….do you have nausea?

I have been gluten free for two weeks and still have nausea and it is 3 months post gallbladder surgery—no stones but low functioning gallbladder…

I have the same problem I've had the same tests and everything comes back normal I've kept a journal of everything I've ate or drink and it doesn't matter what it is and how small apportion it is count to 5 or 10 after eating my stomach starts to hurt real bad and I'm on the toilet always diarrhea most of the time it's black stools Which is higher up blood and most times it's red blood but it's always diarrhea. I hear you I'm getting very tired of it also nobody can find what's wrong nobody can fix it

@nanook1970 Just a little addition. Diarrhea and constipation swapping with each other are a very common symptom of several forms of Amyloidosis Light Chair. Not fixable, but handle-able. Check your SERUM Free Light Chain(C) Bindings Site and other protein totals (24 hr, etc.)

I had similar experience but it took 3 to 4 hours for me to react. They did all the tests gastroscopy CAT scan ultrasound coeliac panel but finally a test came back that showed I had a microscopic parasite so they’re treating it with antibiotics. I am hoping it will do the trick although I’m paying for taking the antibiotics with a lot of burning sensation from my throat right through so I’m considering whether to take probiotics as well

The bleeding is certainly a concern, no doubt. I assume that you have had an upper GI series of tests and a colonoscopy with biopsies. Are you losing weight and suffering from constant fatigue due to the symptoms? Have you been put on any drug therapies to try and treat the symptoms? I'm hinting at the possibility of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, which can be difficult to diagnose, even with all the tests.

What have you been eating? I have the same problem but I am still eating a bland diet

Are you able to a lot before you have stomach pains or just small amounts? I have similar issues except I have extreme stomach pains anytime I eat and I can only eat very small amounts like a few bites.
