Diagnosed with osteopenia
My bone scan showed osetopenia (probably due to taking prednisone 5 mg every day for PMR. I don't want to go on Fosamax or Prolia due the side effects of these drugs. I do take calcium 1600 mg, VIt D
5,000 iu daily. Is there anything else I can do to enhance bone health?

Osteopenia diagnosis doesn't normally mean going on medications. Or are you concerned that's where things are heading?

My neurologist keeps bringing up that so need to go on either fosamax or prolia. I just don’t want to have additional GI issues (I have IBS). I feel they just want to push these meds whether you need it right now or not. I’m 80 years old and am looking for quality of life.

I would ask the DR why you need to start medication when you are only in osteopenia. They should explain the reason why.
Do you have any fractures?

Hormone replacement
My husband had osteopenia in 2019 age 79 and did nothing other than start calcium then the concern got lost in the shuffle of Covid. He takes 2 mil of prednisone
In 2025 he had 3 spine compression fractures .
My Dexas had all been normal but moved slightly lower last year. His showed only osteopenia except femur stem a few months prior to the fractures and after reading lots I insisted we both get a Quantatative CT which showed him to have severe osteoporosis and me to have average of -2.2. It’s more accurate than Dexa.
He was fortunate enough to be approved for Evenity and so was I which I do gladly after seeing the effect of his quality of life.
