Diagnosed with cirrhosis with ascites, and unspcified heptic cirrhosis
Hi back in March I was diagnosed with cirrhosis with ascites, and unspecified hepatic cirrhosis type (hcc) in two emergency rooms. I unfortunately went against medical advice not staying in the hospital not realizing the severity of this. Has anyone else been diagnosed with this ? Doesn't unspecified mean they aren't sure if that's the cause? As of late my weight keeps fluctuating and I pretty much get pain in my right side abdomen under my ribs( where my liver is located). I also have been experiencing memory issues and occasionally exhibiting symptoms of HE. I know this is a lot and I totally regret not staying in the hospital but trying to get the most answers as possible and to make sure I ask the right questions when I see the specialists.

Hi. Sometimes a tough call to stay at the hospital or not. Don't beat yourself up. I had cirrhosis of the liver for years and did not have those symptoms but I am sure everyone is different. If it were me I would make a doctor's appointment as soon as possible. Just guessing not super serious but better safe than sorry. Best of luck whatever you do.

2 Reactions@jgrausso84 Hi and welcome to Mayo Connect. Your diagnosis sounds very serious. To me, having had ascites, that is my immediate concern for you. Has anything been done to help with the ascites?

2 ReactionsI had to make an appointment to see a specialist which was 3 months out. Unfortunately by the time the appointment came around I had lost my job and insurance. Everyone keeps saying I should go back to the ER I went to originally and see if they can get me into seeing something.

1 Reaction@jgrausso84 That's what I would do. Ascites usually results from a liver that's not working right. I know, because that's what happened to me. I would want a doctor's advice quick. Please let me know how things go. Thanks.

1 Reaction@jgrausso84 How are you feeling?
I had the same diagnosis in 2019. It turned out the cause of the ascites was portal hypertension, which, in my case, got worse. It makes you susceptible to HE, and variceal bleeding (which can be life threatening). I recommend a Hepatologist visit ASAP, but go to the ER if you cough up any blood, even the smallest amount. There are treatments for the ascites, and also for the portal hypertension.
Also, if you haven’t already, call your state’s local Medicaid office and apply over the phone, you’ll get covered right away. I feel for you, but please do not put things off, now is the time for some action.
