Dental appointment after 3 months of TKR
I had left knee TKR on January 29. Have a periodontal appointment on May 6, which will be a little over 3 months from my surgery. I have also started taking Fosamax from March 1. Should I be concerned about my periodontal appt? Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ask your dentist and your doctor they will know your medical history and what procedures might be a problem if any . I would think that the short time on Fosamax would play a positive role.
But...
Yes, Fosamax (alendronate) can cause dental problems, specifically a rare but serious condition called osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ). It is a type of bisphosphonate that reduces bone turnover, potentially leading to poor healing in the jawbone after tooth extractions, implants, or other invasive procedures.

1 Reactionfollowing...!
As I recall, following my TKRs, I took antibiotics prior to dental appointments for a few years after each TKR. Check with your dentist for premeds before your appointment.

1 ReactionCheck with your dentist and doctor. I had a TKR and I couldn’t go to the dentist for 6 months. Also, check on antibiotics.
Thanks for the advice. Will be sending a message to my surgeon and PCP. Will keep everyone posted.
I had my TKR on March 9 and my surgeon has given me a prescription for antibiotics to be taken prior to dental appointments.

2 ReactionsMy surgeon got back to me and had given me a prescription of 2000 mg of amoxicillin to be taken prior to 1 hour of dental appt. Thanks for all the info.
