Degenerative discs lower spine, thoracic spine, neck: Fix the pain?

Posted by chma265 @chma265, Mar 28, 2022

Please help! I have degenerative discs lower spine, thoracic spine and neck. I’m only 51 years old and the condition is getting worse. I can only do about 2-3 hours of activity the whole day. I think I’m going crippled. Is there anything that can help me with pain and prolong the process.

@curlylocks7 Ah yes, I've not yet tried but have heard that chiropractors can be helpful. Thank you.

@ccchang Osteopaths can also help, especially the ‘’hands-on’’ type..if your area has a medical school for osteopaths, help may be found there..

@ccchang Be sure the chiropractor is a 'functional' chiropractor. It makes a huge difference in how they approach treatment!

@curlylocks7 Thank you. I actually have scoliosis (with Harrington Rods, since 1980) so sadly, have been advised by one of my doctors to not see chiropractors. Otherwise I'd try one.

@ccchang thank you, I don’t think a Chiropractor could help. I am doing PT to strength muscles around the disc’s.

@nycmusic Thank you, I did see a DO about 5 years ago but it didn't help. She ended up referring me to Physical Therapist. I also tried a naturopath but that did help either because he said my issue was structural not internal, although I have been using a Joint Disc Complex supplement from his office.

@dunbun13 Have you looked into a "functional" chiropractor? There is a huge difference. I wonder if your doctor is aware of this fact.

@ccchang Hey Cori! I’ve had some other things going on in life and have not been on this site recently. How are things going with you? Have you had any luck finding the right surgeon?

I was wondering what you do besides PT to help with this.

Hi Sherry. Yes I found a good orthopedic surgeon here on Oahu who specializes in scoliosis and had a XLIF surgery on 9/22. My surgery went well (i.e., no complications) but we were both hoping that my numbness might be addressed immediately but sad to say, I still have it. He (and my PCP) said that nerves can take a while to repair. Am hoping and thinking the surgery addressed the lower back pain that I was having on long walks, but it's hard to tell right now since I'm still in recovery mode. Am trying different supplements right now for my nerves and bought magnesium flakes (for foot baths).

@curlylocks7 No, I wasn't aware of a functional chiropractor. I'll ask my doctor. Thank you!

@ccchang wow, I didn’t realize that you just had surgery! I can’t find the earlier conversation where you talked about what vertebrae you are trying to address. I only saw the one in this string where you said you have Harrington rods from a prior surgery.
What did they do during this surgery?
