Dactylaria

Posted by pacathy @pacathy, Dec 26, 2023

In addition to the unusual pseudomonas putida in a late November sputum culture, it also grew out Dactylaria. I reviewed lit and while it’s been reported in post transplant patients, there are only a couple of reports in immunocompetent patients. It’s found primarily in soil or decaying matter.
I searched this forum and found one from 2016, but there’s no follow-up.

I’m still waiting for the MAC culture which should be available in next week or two. My plan is to contact pulmonologist after that to find out if we’ll watch/wait or treat. Does that plan sound reasonable?

@pacathy It looks like you have already done the research; Dactylaria is an entire species of fungi, only a few specific ones are found in living creatures, particularly in poultry. I would be surprised if this was more than an "artifact" and not a true infection. Was it further identified in the report?

Your plan sounds very reasonable to me.

Thanks, Sue. Surprisingly, it was not further identified. I also suspect it’s just an artifact.

One detail does bother me though. I had raked and bagged about 10 huge bags of leaves (wearing mask, glasses and gloves) the couple days before I started having cold like symptoms. I initially thought it might be allergies, but when it lasted then turned into a sinus infection, it seemed like my usual URI. It was during the early stage of the sinus infection that I coughed up deep mucus. I have 5 and 7 year old grandchildren that I see most days and I imagine it’s more likely a virus from them.
I guess I’ll hire someone from now on.
