Curonix Nerve Stimulator Implant - Rotator Cuff Injury

Posted by robinlynne @robinlynne, Jul 2 7:48pm

My 95 year old mother has a very painful rotator cuff shoulder issue severely limiting her range of motion. Because of her age they will not do surgery. She does not want an oral medication for fear of feeling 'drugged' and falling. She had a visit with an Orthopedic Surgeon who recommends a Curonix Nerve Stimulator Implant. Has anyone had a good result with this or have any other suggestions for pain besides this implant? Thanks in advance.

Hi Robin.

I'm sorry about your Mom but 95 years? Wow that's fantastic.

One thing you can look into for her is Kinesiology Tape. I'm using it now to support the shoulder and allow swelling to decrease (improved circulation). It is commonly called KTape and is available on Amazon. For the record, I'm 70 and getting my left shoulder replaced next month.

I would start off with a tape that has mild adhesion (they aren't specifically called that, but the Pro version adheres more to the skin and can cause problems when removed).

My wife uses two 10" strips of tape and makes an oval around the very top of the shoulder joint. There are videos that show you how to apply the tape.

Hope that helps.

Joe

@heyjoe415 Is that the tape that you see athletes wearing so often?

Yes it is. Joe, thanks for the reminder. Elbow pain is inhibiting my shoulder PT. I'll tape it tomorrow.

I've really been impressed with the KTape on my shoulder. It had reduced swelling a little bit. It certainly improves circulation. More important - it feels like the joint is just supported better than without the tape.

It requires a little practice to apply. There are plenty of videos provided by KTape and on YouTube.

(One other thing worth noting - I think it works so well on my shoulder because there is plenty of space to apply it (although I couldn't do it alone,, my wife has become the KTape guru). If you do run into trouble applying it, I'd do a Google search to see if anyone has overcome any problems.)

I have used it on my elbow before. My now retired hand therapist was a KTape wizard and she taught us how. I don't have my computer now, but there is one RockTape trainer with some great videos. We have used it for many years, my wrists are probably taped 3 days a week due to my friend Arthur 😉

I have had 2 shoulder surgeries they are brutal. Glad the doc said not a good idea. Takes a lot to come back from that.
To know if a stimulator is going to work. I'd first try a tens unit - she can put where she has pain and turn it on and off as needed. Replaces the electrodes daily.
I would not jump into surgery at 95 right away for the simulator where the tens unit just might do the trick.
Another great alternative is lidocaine patches 5% 12 hours on 12 hours off. Good luck to your mom

aparently no one has used or given an opinion on how the Curonix Nerve Stimulator worked for pain?

Taping the elbow or ankle with KTape is fairly complicated. There are videos and with enough practice it can be done without assistance.

The greatest benefit is the improved circulation in the joint. At least in my case (shoulder), the tape seems to also provide support for the shoulder joint. But I rely on my wife for the taping!
