Has anyone had a Cornea Transplant?

Posted by ricomartin @ricomartin, Feb 12 9:28pm

I'd like to know if anybody has gone through an unsuccessful Cornea transplant. My left Cornea was replaced due to Fuchs Dystrophy almost a month ago. To date, after the procedure and 2 air bubbles injected into my eye, my vision is still cloudy

Hi Toby. While my experience with cornea replacement is still fresh on my mind, I understood that the main problems I was dealing with revolved around the proper/flat adherence of the graft onto my eye's surface. That resulted in 2 additional bubbles shot into my eye after my initial operation. My question to you is, has your vision been properly restored after your procedure? Is there a chance that there may still be some pockets of your surface where the cornea is still not sitting flat? In my time of desperation before my vision was restored, I just kept telling myself to trust the science. I hope you get through this successfully

@ricomartin: Thank you for your reply. I have seen my doctor several times since the operation. I was told that the operation had been successful, but that there continues to be inflammation. This has improved but I am still taking eye drops twice a day. The issues with contrast may improve within a year or less, so I'll have to wait and see. But, I have not been told that the issue is related to the adherence of the graft.

Hi Fred, @ricomartin, you're welcome. I'm glad we shocked you with a quick reply and you feel more hopeful.

It is tough, I felt devastated as well, and with no pun intended, it really opened my eyes for the appreciation of sight. I also had cataract surgeries prior to transplants and after all the grind of surgeries and healing, I was amazed at the restoration of my sight.

Try your best to keep a positive outlook and remember each person's journey may be slightly different - if you need another air bubble, then that's what it may take. Have faith that your doctor is doing whats needed for a successful outcome. You got this!

Will you check back in and let us know how all continues to go?

@evvy2911 I got distance lenses and yes, still need glasses for reading. I was happy to say goodbye to my old bottle cap thick lenses though and trade for nice new thin ones!

Are you planning to have cataract surgeries?
