Coping with age & serious illness. Anyone positive want to share?
I am a 72 year old widow and mother of 4 adult children. When my husband died 4 years ago I knew I had to reach out to make more friends, so I joined several local groups. I have some close friends and
enjoy going to community events. I have had bipolar disorder all my life (well controlled with medication), and earlier this year was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. I am still leading an active
life and am philosophical about my situation. Is there anyone out there interested in chatting about getting older or coping with illness? I have ideas to share, and would love to hear from people in
similar situations who would like to chat about our lives.

@ellu thanks for letting me know about the yellow sunflower lanyard! I haven't seen that in the U.S. but it would be a great idea! Unfortunately I've had experiences where perhaps that would have helped others to be more considerate. I will look into this! Thanks, Marnee

1 ReactionWell, once again, I have gotten inspiration from so many. Aging is certainly a challenge, but my colostomy and hip replacement this past year seem minimal compared to what many others are experiencing. I think one of the most notable things I have been trying to do is make more younger friends (I am 82), people in their fifties and sixties. I am my husband’s primary caregiver, but we are lucky to have purchased long term care insurance many years ago, so we have people in and out of the house all the time. Plus my husband gets in-home PT and OT, which is a blessing. I do recommend that anyone who has an Area Agency on Agency close by contact them. Many people do not know about the ton of services they provide, but these agencies are a brilliant resource for many. Thank goodness for this chance to chat with others facing the same trials—kind of keeps things in perspective. Bette

7 ReactionsSo I am 72 and my husband is 76.
He’s lost about 15lbs in the last few months.
His bloodwork was all good in December. I’m so worried and think there is something wrong with him. A little forgetfulness but still sharp.
I’m so scared I’m
Going to lose him.

2 ReactionsYou mentioned friends and groups. What type of groups?
How about church? Do you attend church, bible study groups?
After my husband died I joind our comunity church and become active. With the help from my church family I became closer to God. Now when I start my day with Him I can get thru the day. I am now 89 years old, I do not drive anymore. I have COPD, on continous oxygen, serious back issures, I could go on and on. My body is wearing out. I do not want any more surgeries. When God is ready to take me, I pray that I am ready.

3 Reactions@pollyhet maybe, some medical testing could identify the problem(s) sooner rather than later…wish you both the best.
