COPD supplements

Posted by mindy01 @mindy01, Sep 26 12:50pm

I have seen more than dozens of supplements that claim to be helpful with breathing with COPD. Of these dozens, I've researched each and every one and most, if not all, are a scam. How disheartening. Does anyone know of a supplement that is helpful for COPD and doesn't claim to "cure it in 2-3 days". I'm sure there are more people than myself that would like to know if there is something out there that is helpful without worrying if it would make the problem worse, or heaven forbid, create a different problem.

There is NO miracle cure...don't fall for that stuff...The Only things that I know of is Pulmonary Therapy Rehab..& use your medicine your doc prescribes to help your lungs,..Stay Active as long as you can & live longer..Wishing you the Very Best

Mindy there are no cures - yet- but there are vitamins and supplements that may be beneficial for Copd as well as in general. My pulmonologist has had me on NAC for years now. 2 600 mg caps per day, along with my meds. Roflumilast 500 mcg and Trelegy.
Copd.net has suggestions too.

Exercise, Mediterranean diets, look into clinical trials. If you are where near Philadelphia Temple Hospital - lung division has the premiere authority in the US for Copd, Dr. Gerard Criner and they do trials and host yearly the Gold Standard for Copd. I’ll find the link for that and post it.

A supplement which many say helps with mucus is NAC. Not a cure but has helped me considerably for many years.

somewhere I read there was a tea that helped. Maybe Mullien? Or something similar. Does anyone know about that?

Hello. I purchased mullein drops on Amazon, and I put the recommended amount in my morning coffee. It does not alter the taste of my coffee. I think it has helped reduce the mucus problem. I also have mullein tea, but I think the drops helped me more. That is my experience. Hope that helps.

@pamelaaci In what respect has NAC helped you with mucous. IFind that I spend about 30 minutes a morning clearing my upper airway then again around 11-12 noon more seems to accumulate...the biggest issue is in the late afternoon where I swear I could use one box of cubed kleenex then continues into the evening. I am on Dupixent, Breztri and Albuterol. I do pulmonary hygiene at leart 3 x per day, with my son helping with percussions. There are times that I need to use Hyper-Sal to really clear. I am active with gym time with a trainer 3x/week - strength training with 5-10 lb weights, leg presses at 40 lbs. So not frail, just can't seem to get rid of the secretions. Have had 3 valves placed in LLL and am on 02 , with resting 02 sats of 95! Its just the secretions and the "ugly cough" that has me down. Any suggestions. Have even consideed Rheoplasty. Dr Criner is my hero.....I think that I have read all his research papers and wish that he was my physician. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanx for listening!

@kndaustin71 I years ago used to use Mucinex DM for the mucus but once I started using NAC 1000mg once daily (at least 7 years ago?) I do not seem to have any issues with mucus. Yes -- I do every so often need to blow my nose, but nothing like being clogged with mucus. It truly does thin the mucus out for me. Great that you do exercise and with a trainer at that too which is extremely helpful, excellent with our disease. The biggest help for me in addition to keeping active; breathing exercises which I learned after my visit to Mayo Rochester . Have you tried one of those Aerobika devices? I was given one but haven't found the need to use it. A link below:

Many find this little appliance helpful, I have one but haven't found the need to use it (knock on wood). I too am on Breztri, Combivent when/if needed and for more than a year on the new Ohtuvayre. Cheers to your valves: I have 3 ULL installed back in 2020 which did help in spite of their saying they might not, being my lungs are homogeneous.

@ktf have you had any lung infections due to the NAC? I've read it makes some bacteria resistant to antibiotics.
