COPD and Prednison withdraw

Posted by karinjean @karinjean, 4 days ago

I have been having terrible side effects from coming off of prednisone, and was wondering if anyone else has had weakness, tiredness?

My pulmonologist prescribed prednisone for me a month ago . I have stage 4 emphysema. I was having issues with intense coughing and phlegm. He gave me 20 tablets . He said take one in the morning . If it didn’t help , then take 2 the next morning . The one helped So I continued 1 a day. After 16 days , he told me to cut the remaining 4 in half and take the half for 8 days. The first pill helped me . I felt almost normal for the next 15 days . Then as I tapered them with 1/2 a day for 8 days , I could feel my symptoms returning. I told my nurse those were wonderful pills . She said ““Well, yes and no”. - I haven’t had any more . It was a nice break and I have not returned to the severe coughing . Did you taper off of the pills? Or just abruptly stop ? Crystalena

Definitely tell your doc if you’re having tough time withdrawing. The doc may recommend a slower, more gradual taper. Sone folks need to decrease my 1 or less mg per day or week. Much depends on how long you were on dose and how high dose was.

Always taper… sorry to hear that you’re feeling your old symptoms… My husband went through the exact same thing and he is at the stage of his disease where he is on 5 mg a day for the rest of his life. Maybe you can have that discussion with your pulmonologist. It may however, be too soon for you.
