Constipation after colostomy reversal: Suggestions?

Posted by janice3 @janice3, Mar 16, 2025

July,24 I had my sigmoid colon removed due to diverticulitis. I ended up with a leak and became septic. I had emergency surgery and had a colostomy bag until Feb 3, 25. Bowel movements were often first couple weeks. Now, I have a lot of constipation. Doc told me to increase fiber. I have and it doesn’t help much. Any suggestions?

I had a hemi-colectomy and an ileostomy for a volvulus (twisted colon--not cancer). Ileostomy was reversed 6 months later. I was advised to avoid constipation--but no advice as to how.

My method: I take magnesium citrate capsules daily. I aim for 400 mg magnesium daily (e.g. 4 of my brand of capsules). Experiment--you may be able to do with less. I do not advise more. I do not avoid spicy foods, e.g. Indian. Extra fiber from supplements may work, but it may only make the constipation worse.
