On Tagrisso: Constant vomiting

Posted by mikee2all @mikee2all, Apr 6 9:14am

I am presently on Tagrisso. But for the past 2 weeks I have been vomiting every time is eat or drink something., even water. I am getting dehydrated. I take a small amount of bicarb and it seems to smooth my stomach out. Solutions?

@mikee2all, Sorry to read that you are still suffering. Has your doctor had any suggestions? Are you taking any anti-nausea medications? Have recent scans shown any new tumor growth?

Yesterday I went to the hospital. They put me into a cat scan and found that I had fluid in my right lung. So, they put a catheter and drained out 2 liters of fluid.....
It seems that my coughing has subsided a little. The Dr. told me that the cancer was still active. I will see my oncologist soon. I want to prevent the liquid from coming back.

@mikee2all, I'm glad that you listened to your body and went into the hospital. It can be difficult to know when to seek help. I hope your oncology office can be helpful in guiding these types of decisions. I used to feel that I was being a bother, but my oncology office has reassured me that I can, and should, reach out when I'm questioning my own symptoms and side-effects. You've really been through some difficult times recently hopefully your team can get this fluid under control, so you can keep some food down, and ultimately put some weight back on.
Did the hospital provide any advice for the nausea, or did they feel that taking the fluid off the lung may help your system readjust?

Thanks for your reply and concern. They gave me something intravenously for the nausea but didn't do much. Eating has been a real problem. Everything I eat, I throw it back up. Not all the time but enough. Tomorrow, I have a meeting with a doctor that dispenses medicine. I'll let you know what she does.

@mikee2all, I've been on Tagrisso for about three and a half years now. For the first several months, I learned not to take it near food—at least two hours after a meal and two hours before the next. I became nauseous if I didn't. My body eventually adapted to the point where I've taken it right before a meal with no side effects.

How long have you been on Tagrisso? It does lower the white blood cell count, which can cause mild IBS. I've found that going gluten-free has reduced my digestive issues. Beyond that, my Oncologist referred me to a Gastroenterologist who performed an upper GI. In my case, the upper GI revealed that I have Barrett's syndrome, a condition where prolonged reflux causes the cells of the esophagus to try to turn into stomach cells. This example and others have taught me that I can't blame everything on Tagrisso. Nowadays, I report everything I'm feeling to my Oncologist, who sends me to a specialist when necessary.

It was 9 months before all my digestive conditions were diagnosed, so I have great sympathy for your situation. I hope you and your doctors are able to figure out what's going on and eliminate your nausea soon.
